Im after some good backup software, something that can create bootable DVD(s) from which I can restore from, anyone any suggestions?

Ive used acronis before but dont believe that will create backup purely on dvd media?

Depeneds how much ypou have to backup tbh..

You're using Vista Ultimate so you can backup and restore directly to and from an ext HDD.

Alternatively, Acronis creates an "Emergeny disk", which then restores from an image or backups held on an ext HDD.

Simple.

I know Symantec Ghost does. I only use the business version so can't comment on the home version. I just create two bootable floppies and then image to dvd then if I need to restore just boot of the same disks and restore from it.

Preferably was wanting something that creates a full back up to disk, my lenovo and some other pcs came with such software but they are for the specific machines only. Cheers for the help tho

Sorry its not for the system in sig, laptop using home premium atm

hmmm, no floppy on this laptop :(

try acronis trueimage home. been using it for the year and have never had any problems unlike norton ghost which didnt load up half the time on computer

I still don't get why you need a disk set. Arconis creates a Rescure disk, that restores an image directly from an external device. If you are using a 500GB ext HDD, for example, you don't have to worry about space and infinate amount of disks laying around. It's a simple cheap solution.

the way i made a set for my mum..

create an acronis iso (lets you do it in the tools) this will only contain the bootable acronis program files (to backup & restore)

either use this disc, or in windows, set the 'destination' for the image to be the DVDrw drive, and it'll let you burn the backup to DVD(+/-)R(W)(s) :p

so to restore the image, you'd put in the bootable acronis cd, click 'restore' then put your 1st backup DVD in and away you go.

it's a far slower solution than backing up to an external hard drive, but it does work perfectly

Blank DVD's are cheaper and easier to store than an external HDD which I dont have lying around :)

ah cool, ill give that a bash

it's a good idea to do things like disable system restore and run ccleaner slim before doing a backup

will remove a lot of crap / temp files, so the backup will be smaller & quicker

Yeah, ill be doing it from a fresh install, with all updates and service packs etc, so let me get this right, i need to create an acronis media builder, its saying approx 53mb (cd i guess) then i do....?

*edit* actually i think i might have it sussed, just wonder if it supports dual layer DVD's

yup

i never install acronis, i just install it on a test machine, create the bootable disc, and only use that :) saves about 100mb on the backup space then..

-yeah, just chuck it on a cd

Im getting confused lol, if you dont install it, how do you actually make the backup itself, sorry for all the questions

all you need to make the backup is the bootable cd

it comes up with the same interface as it would in windows, and runs totally from ram then :)

basically i installed it on an a test pc, made the bootable disc, and now i only use the disc
