Hi guys,
Up untill now i've had 2 hard drives, one 74GB raptor used for windows, apps, uni work, And one 250GB-WD used as storage, music, photos, etc. The 250GB is now full and the 74GB is in need of a format as its going slowmo and is messy.

my little silverstone case only has 2 HDD slots so I am going to replace the 74GB with a 500GB-WD i have just bought and use that as the storage drive.

What is going to be the best way to set up the 250GB drive, in terms of partitions, so that it can be used for Windows (XP), applications, uni work and additional storange if there is space left. Is it a good idea to have windows on its own little so it can easily be formatted without having to format the whole drive? Is it wise to have My Doc's and uni work on that same partition or again on there own? If applications are installed on a different partition to windows then windows is re-installed, will the applications still work or will some vital files have been lost?

thanks. :D

(sorry if this has been asked before but i have done a search first)

most applications will need to be reinstalled if windows is reinstalled, since they store info in the registry

things like games often work without reinstalling..

personally i never bother with partitions, but a rule of thumb is 10gb for the windows dir

ok so it seems like windows, apps and games might as well go on the same partition as if im going to do a windows re-install they might as well all get done. so leave the 500GB purely as storage and split the 250GB into a storage section and a windows, apps section.

My PC is mainly used for;
Windows
Uni (product design); photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, ProEngineer, Alias, Office
Web
Media; Music, films
Poker
Games; Hardly any

Is all that going to be ok on 100GB of the 250GB drive? leaving me 150GB added storage.

the other thing i wanted to ask was is it good to have a separate partition for paging files and/or photoshop RAM as i am often working with very large files?

On the 250GB

60GB -Windows XP/Vista along with all of your main apps that you will use (firefox, nod etc) All of your uni apps can also go on this drive. You shouldn't even go past 50% capacity with all of this space i wouldn't imagine.

190GB - Media. Music, video and pics and all of your work files. Should be plenty of space here. You can even install any games you wish to play too.

500GB (your new drive) : Downloads and backup. You will probibly want to backup a lot of your stuff and on a 500GB hdd that shouldnt be an issue. Also, if you download a lot you have a shed lot of storage.

That is how i would do it anyway.

I would go with this setup also.

60GB for Windows, Apps, Games? that's crazy low! Windows folder will take up 10GB on it's own, my steam folder's 24GB!

The only thing you suggest moving off the Windows partition is his uni work, and his current Windows partition is already pushing 74GB.

Personally, I'd just have:
250GB - Windows + Apps + Games + Work Stuff

500GB - Music + Videos + Pics + Backups of Work Stuff
