Hi, so I'm looking for a good racing game but I don't really know any, prefer something realistic and not NFS style games, but if there is a really good one then tell me anyway, not played a racing game since forza 2, are there any good online racing games with some sort of a ranking system? Want something that I can play online, preferably with some sort of car customization or something along the lines of that ;P thanks.

ACR = AutoClubRevolution

free game .

project cars for something more indepth

since getting a decent steering wheel ive gone back to dirt games which are a lot better with wheel

ACR is hardly realistic though :p

Project C.A.R.S shows some small promise, but very much a work in progress and not worth it right now imo.

rFactor 2 is there as well, still a work in progress but much better than CARS so far.

But the king of sims right now is iRacing, it aint cheap though with a subscription + content model, but for that money you get, imo, the best simulation there is with laser scanned tracks which are superb, but the sim itself whilst under constant development does lack some of the 'nice' features.

As for Rankings, not sure CARS or rFactor 2 really offer anything? iRacing provides you with iRating (based on how good you are, finish in the top half of a race and you generally gain some, finish in the bottom half and you generally lose some) and Safety Rating which is how clean you are, it's a non-fault system so any contact between cars affects both drivers but that evens out over time if you're actually clean.

EDIT: And just finished reading the post :P unfortunately very little in the way of car customization in any pc sim really, setups you can do in the 3 above, paintschemes in iRacing and I believe rFactor2 as well, but no changing engines or anything.

If you care about physics and realism then these are probably the creme de la creme of racing sims

1. Iracing (extremely in depth ranking system)
2. Game Stock Car 2012
3. Rfactor 2 (In beta stage at mo but still purchasable)

All of those 3 have in depth garages where you can setup the car, you can't add parts etc though like in Forza/GT5 etc.

Project C.A.R.S is also an option if you want something more arcadey

Honestly though Iracing is the king, at least until Assetto Corsa comes out.

GT Legends- 60s and 70s cars from Minis to Ferarri Daytonas. Can create a custom profile for whatever controller you have.graphics look pretty dated now but do the job. You have to download the game from simbins website now as the disk copy has Starforce and it doesn't 'do' vista. (alternatively, you can take a picture of your GTL disk and send an email to Simbin who grant you a digitial copy- see "GTL revival"). The tracks aren't that great though.

Shift 2- Newer so has online integration with scoreboards etc. at the moment the closest thing to Forza on PC, both in physics and game set up. Slightly arcadier. Car customisation!

I have Project Cars and it runs perfectly on maxed settings except AA. Don't expect to do any actual racing though, the AI just doesnt work (its in alpha at the moment I think?), but good for hotlapping and there are online scoreboards for that. 20 tracks or so. Any weather, day or night, interesting array of cars.

If you want realism iracing is the only option, the other options are certainly more 'arcade' orientated.

game stock car 2012 is arguably better in terms of physics and tyre modelling, it just lacks in lots of other areas (relatively unknown tracks, not many cars etc)

iracing has great physics and is a more complete package.

hmm think I'll wait for cars to release and play that, looks good. I'll probably just play dirt/nfs until then :P ty

avoid simraceway like the plague, its terrible... its like a really really bad rfactor mod.

they are an extremely suspect company as well, they buy likes for facebook etc and seem to put all their money into marketing rather than developing a good sim.

Thats completely incorrect.

iRacing has the best online but becomes silly expensive, as for realism it doesn't even come close to rFactor 2 or Game Stock Car 2012 which have considerably better physics, tyre model etc...

Unfortunately, unless you want a full-on sim or something quite arcadey, there isn't anything available in that bracket - the only real options for that are Forza or Gran Turismo on the consoles.

I'd dearly love for something similar to Forza/GT to be available on a PC, that's both easy enough to pick up and just play, but also advanced enough that you can get much better by spending a little effort or use a wheel etc.

I think if you're in this position between arcade and full-on simulation, you've got to look past the PC and towards the consoles... :(

The closest that there has ever been a Gran Turismo type game for the PC in my experience was SEGA GT, but this was like back in the early 2000's so it is ancient now.

But yeah other than the usual recommendations for the full racing simulations or arcade types on the PC side, the consoles are really where you can only get a Gran Turismo or Forza since they are Sony and Microsoft owned respectively. Of the two, Forza is much more likely to get a PC version, but Microsoft just wouldn't allow that and their support for PC has been really dire anyway.

One day, hopefully a developer has the balls and resources to do a game for PC.
