As title really. Having never played a RTS before but recently seeing Supreme Commander and CoH, I fancy giving RTS games a go. But which is the best RTS game for someone who hasn't played them before i.e good tutorials, not too complicated to get to grips with?

Cheers

The C&C games are pretty simple - not too many units and the missions start off very straightforward. 'Generals' is the last one before the brand-new C&C3 comes out. You should be able to pick that up for about a tenner on the high street, so I'd give that a go :)

A lot of folk probably started on command and conquer so id recommend the Command and Conquer - The First Decade bargin at about £18

Every RTS I've played has been pretty easy to start with, normally with some sort of tutorial. Just pick one you like the look of/universe it's based in and get stuck in.

Warcraft 3's single player campaign is really good for getting used to how it all works then you can start some skirmishes and the like to see how multiplayer plays

starcraft and warcraft also have some nice story progressions in them...i do like a good story with an rts hehe

Aren't they a bit old? I dont think my copy of starcraft even runs on XP.. (I may be wrong, but still it's an ancient game :S)

starcraft runs under vista :p and old doesnt mean bad...startcraft is a classic, and by warcraft i was referring to 3...havent played the previous ones

admitedly this was only tested with the best seller discs rather than the original disc which i lost eons ago

I'd go for Warcraft 3. I'm not a big RTSer, but WC3 was the one I played for the longest (got to last orc mission, then started using cheats to get the storyline). It still works for win XP and I believe that multi-player is still going pretty strong through DOTA.

Age of Empires 3. It's definately the RTS I enjoy the most :) And I find a good feeling of accomlishment in that game. Other games where it's constant build-to-replace-dead-units-until-you-win I get a bit fed up... But AGE3 you can build a good base and a big ol' army then obliterate :D

It might be worth noting that I'm pretty rubbish at RTS games though ;) Have never been great at them.

Dawn of War Anthology would be a great place to start.

Excellent tutorials, relatively straightforward control system, not too many units to micromanage, and a progressive approach to missions in the campaign. It's also (relatively) modern.

In fact Dawn of War was the first RTS I've really been able to get into since Red Alert 2.
