Good RTS for beginner?

Got to agree with those who said Company of Heroes as the best RTS. But for a begginer it might be a bit daunting, especialy online, as it can be very tactical. For a begginer I would suggest C&C.

Supreme Commander, just get straight in there with the action.

Play the single player mode and it will slowly build you up!

Red Alert 2 is also a good one!

Age of Empires 3. It's definately the RTS I enjoy the most :) And I find a good feeling of accomlishment in that game. Other games where it's constant build-to-replace-dead-units-until-you-win I get a bit fed up... But AGE3 you can build a good base and a big ol' army then obliterate :D

It might be worth noting that I'm pretty rubbish at RTS games though ;) Have never been great at them.

Bah since the age of mthology series the aoe is messed up imo, the only good aoe's were 1 + expansion and 2 + exp pack, doesnt age of empires have a poulation limit (you say big ol army ?) ?

Command and conquer games mainly RA2, Generals are good 1st RTS games, easy to play, CoH is way too tactical for a 1st game, heck even i had trouble when i started CoH while i've played almost every big RTS game. Supreme commander same story, too much units too much stuff and the tutorials arn't exactly easy for RTS first timers.

Ye I was thinkng that as I typed it. There's a population limit, but it's not that much of a hinderance on gameplay. Plus if it does annoy you, you can always use a trainer or whatever to remove it :D

its easier getting to grips with them through singleplayer, you'll find as storys progress so does you're available tech tree in most games. So try things with decent storylines, kind of takes your attention away from learning as you're doing it passively. Age of empires 1+2 both brilliant, although v dated, and have pop caps, myth&3 were a bit pants for me to be honest. Starcraft(yes its old but its soo good) and warcraft3 are good options, wc3 has a great story, as does the expansion, online is still going strong with a lot of custom maps etc too.
DoW is pretty good too, only played origional and imperial expansion(which i thought was crap single player)

Also cant go wrong with command+conquers, although generals is a bit of a dud in the storyline department, not really having one of much magnitude. CoH seems easy enough to pickup(just started) but supcom seems a bit too tactical for me, only played the demo though. Start on anything, even the new ones, you'll pick it up great, but give the oldies a try too, theres some classics.

When it's all said and done they are all very similar. You can't really go wrong no matter what game you pick. Buy CoH, Supcom or C&C3. Play through the tutorial then single player to get the hang of it, then go for a good blast online with other random noobs.

If you buy the Company of Heroes pack that includes Dawn of War then you've got two good RTS games for the price of one.

I agree cant see the point in going into ancient games, just start playing SUP COMM, play it on easy it really isnt hard, the difference between easy and hard though is massive.

Definitely Dawn of War. Aside from being an excellent and accessible RTS in it's own right, it has a great story, excellent ott voice acting, fantastic unit animations and tons of atmosphere.

You can pick the original up really cheap, and the anthology is available online for less that 30 quid.

And two verticle stripes either side in "widescreen mode" :(

Played RTS since i had a PC, well pretty much anyway....... did play 6 years within an RTS clan, mainly playing the AOE series of games, also played a lot of C&C and various other RTS games.

So firstly CoH..... what a great game.... until after a few weeks of play then its just dull and restrictive....... lacking any variation of units when you compare to the other offerings on the market.

C&C have always been great games, especially fun for lan, too competitive online (i played my share ;))

Now AOE, or the series, are great, simple, fun, and enough variety.... geez my mum plays AOM, and use to play AOE:ROR..... its a lovable game. I still play AOM, which imo (notice the IMO here) is still more fun then AOE3.

I've played them all, or most of them, WC3 + exp, Cossacks, Stracraft, C&C........ blah blah blah......could go on. but zzzzZZZZ i'd be bored just typing it.

For someone starting out...... AOE.... well anyone of the series, or settlers which is very alike are great easy to play games to start with, C&C would work great to if you prefer tanks and planes to knights and archers.... etc..

You realise that as a newcomer to RTS's, the poor original poster probably hasn't a clue what half of those acronyms stand for :p

Aren't they a bit old? I dont think my copy of starcraft even runs on XP.. (I may be wrong, but still it's an ancient game :S)
It's THE most popular RTS game out there and is still the most played RTS game online :)

It's pretty much a national sport in korea and is still patched every other month :)

Quite a few people suggesting C&C.... IMO DoW is easier to pick up for a newbie due to the tutorial system and better control system.

Also get Warrior Kings. It has no multiplayer but Warrior Kings:Battles does. It's the most advanced RTS of it's time but it gets no love. It has lots of unit formations all the battlefield physics and you choose to be Good, Evil, or Neutral. You start off plain Jane European style building, then advance and you can get a giant Angel or a Giant Demon, lots of different units. It's fun. Also Earth 2160 has awesome graphics for 2005 rts, looks like CNC3. It's gameplay is killer too. Try the demo's for Supreme Commander and CNC3. Also if you like tactical modern battles, get Joint Task Force...it kicks major ass. I love getting to be SpecOps and Rangers/Combat Engineers/Medics etc. It's based off of present times and you fight in Asia and the Middle east, you always have to help UN soldiers(cause they suck) and it has awesome graphics...kind of like a Battlefield 2 RTS.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned the two Homeworlds, well three if you count the Cataclysm expansion pack. They would be a nice addition to any aspiring RTS players collection. Probably be able to pick 'em up for a fiver each too.

best for beginners i would say is starcraft, total annihilation/supreme commander are also very simple games to master, dawn of war is good game too, but starcraft is definately better for beginners
