Good Silent CPU Fan?

If you want silence, it has to be a passive cooler. The Thermalright Ultra 120 is good, but they actually make a proper passive cooler - the HR-01 LGA775.

It comes with a shroud so you can hook it up to the 120mm extraction fan (seen here in an Akasa Zen) so you can even run a reasonable overclock (2.7GHz E4300 in this case). With a passive graphics card and the rear fan on 7V this rig is almost inaudible (you really have to put your hand down the back to ckeck the airflow). For maximum cooling the powered Ultra 120 is good - but then you can always make your own AC Freezer 12

Make sure you get the proper LGA775 screw-down kit though, the standard push-pin kit is pants.

Zero case air movement would concern me using that shroud. I have a similar setup, large HP passive, case exhaust at 7v. So it's extracting air from the case including heat from the videocard, rather than forcing air through the CPU.

I think it actually helps air movement because the air is being drawn through a restricted opening the air speed is higher so the air movement around the cooler is affected further away. It's like water down a plughole. It sets up big eddies around the plughole so mixing is improved.

That's my theory anyway. It certainly doesn't give me temperature problems with the 6200 series graphics card in the picture.

The Gigabyte 3D case has two 120mm exhaust fans running at 1,000rpm. Would seem to be a good match for this.

I am looking to purchase a good CPU fan that is extremely quiet. I am currently using an Arctic Freezer, which is just a little noisy as it whirls at 2,500 RPM ;)
Btw, what system is this for? we are all assuming its an INTEL Core2 Duo? (LGA 775).

If its AMD I got a feeling the Thermalright heatsinks will be facing upwards, not ideal for either but an extra bad move if u get the HR-01 series?

Nope. They fire east/west just like the Core2Duo systems.

Anyway - so long as you have a PSU with a bottom 120mm it'll still be pretty efficient facing North/South.

Actually after having a closer look it does appear you can swivel the Heatsink to face the right way :)

The locking clamp somehow curves around the heatpipes, ha good old Thermalright!
