I am currently considering getting into trackdays with a mechanically minded friend of mine. I have quite fancied the idea for a while, but the Donington VXR day has finally convinced me to seriously consider it.

I am currently considering a Honda Civic 1.6 ESI (1994) with 70k on the clock. Would this be a decent car to start with, bearing in mind I (currently) have no intention of spending thousands on kitting it out. The car in question is currently my uncles, and has said I can have it for £200...

Secondly, which would be view as the best route to go:

SORN the car, and buy an A-Frame to take it to/from the track.

Tax/MOT the car but don't insure it, using dayinsure (£12.60 a day) to get it to/from places. This also has the benefit of being able to drive it on the road from time to time.

Tax/MOT and insure the car. Probably unlikely as insurance is looking to be around £400.

I thought most (if not all) track days were for road legal cars only.

There's generally a requirement for the car to be "to MOT standard" (this doesn't mean that the car necessarily needs to have an MOT) simply to give the organiser the ability to stop anything that's blatently dangerous from being on track but there's no formal requirement for the car to be road legal.

I am of the firm belief that one can have fun driving anything (which seems to be a tad controversial around these 'ere parts) so I say get it, strip it out (completely. no dash. nuffink.) and have fun.

You can't tax it without insurance.

Good point! Do you need to have insurance just to get it Taxed, or does it have to be insured whilst it is taxed. E.g. could I just take out insurance, tax the car, then cancel?

To tax it you could just insure it and then cancel the policy or if you have a friend in the trade get them to use their trade policy and tax it for you

orr... just buy a trailor and take it to events on the trailor.

Other option is to trailer it to/from track days, though that does increase costs.

Me and a friend from work recently bought a 1988 BMW 320i for £700, it was already stripped, caged etc.

I met another guy at Donington who bought pretty much the same car but without the "track" mods for £80 from an auction. It had 6 months T&T on it too. He's 24 and it costs him £130 a year insurance.

There are some VERY cheep trackable cars out there, you don't have to spend £££ to get something fun to drive round a track.
