Good value CPU ?

I've recently upgrade my monitor and it seems that my 6800GT (AGP) can no longer cope with it. I'm thinking about upgrade but it'd mean a swap to PCIe. The gfx card alone would be a fair amount of money so I was wondering what would be classed as a decent CPU, which wouldn't hold back a top gfx card, that isn't breaking the bank.
Maybe the Athlon 64 3700 SD ? ..I can spend more if it really is justified.

(If you're in the mood for it you're welcome to specify a mobo too)

Thanks

The 3700 SD is great value for money, and it overclocks like a dream, even if you dont fancy overclocking now you may want to in the future and these processors are great and easy to overclock. I have this and got it to 2.97Ghz on air with standard heatsink and fan.

Thanks for the quick response.

I'm coming from a 3.2Ghz P4 so the clock speeds you quoted doesn't mean too much to me, but I'll look into it ;)

So the 3700 SD is weapon of choice ? ...

sure is a great CPU! I've got one and its a damn good CPU!

Oh :p

Well going back to the Comments about AMD Vs Intel Clock speeds...

I would rather have the AMD 3700 SD Over the Pentium 3.2 Any day of the week , month , year :D

yeah I realise that, I'm just saying that Athlon clock speeds don't mean much to me.
Thanks for your help, looks like I'll go for the CPU you've recommended.

ps. If anyone knows anything about RAM then I've a Q in the RAM section that I'd really appreciate answering. I'm wondering whether my current RAM could be used in my new setup without holding it back in anyway.

...thanks again

I noticed that. I'll have to consider what CPU is best for what task etc ...and compare some benchmarks etc

Either the 3700 or the 3800 x2 depending on what you will be using it for. If it's mainly games then the 3700.... BUT going forward i can see more game makers releasing patches that take advantage of dual processors... confused yet :( at least it's narrowed it down to 2 CPUS :)

I would go for the AMD Opteron 150 : The Opteron 150, which is clocked at 2.4 Ghz, is essentially a Deluxe AMD 4000+ San Diego, with a much stronger memory controller. It clockes very easily on Air to 2.8 Ghz, which is the same as an AMD FX-57, but they cost around about £600 - £650, the Opteron 150 costs around £250 !!!!

On Watercooling or Phase Change cooling you would get even more out of it, possible 3 Ghz or more.

If its mainly for gaming, then a single core CPU is faster, but dual core may be better for well... hmmm... work type stuff :(

Take a look :

Enough said ^_^
