Good value eating in London?

We are off to London for a day in December and wondered if anyone could recommend anywhere specific?

We are a family of five with young children although they have been brought up to behave well when in an eating establishment and they will eat adult meals split between them so there is no need to suggest a Wacky Warehouse for cows lips burger and chips :)

Just do not want to be spending a great deal as can be easily done in London for a relatively **** meal.

For reference, I despise McDondalds, Frankie and Bennys, Pizza Hut even though the latter 2 might well be practical if not knowing anywhere else.

We will be going round most of the center of London during the course of the day so location is not an issue, if it is near a tube station, game on.

Will even consider Fish and Chips on the embankment, even a backstreet Cafe.

Recommendations appreciated.

Thank you.

Dim Sum, small bites for little mites and adults, and cheap per plate :D

The Harbour Seafood restaurant is good in China Town according to my wife (she's Taiwanese). With young kids you might be looking at £30- £40 for all of you minus drinks.

Most walk in places in soho are v good value wise. It's ften cheaper eating out in London than the rest of the UK as places take advantage of the number of times they can turn tables

You could go to Hi Sushi.

There are a few dotted around. I think it's £15 all you can eat Sushi. Be warned the one in Camden has rude staff but the others i have been too have been really good.

How does that sound?

Enjoyed Fire and Stone in Covent Garden when I went to London, wasn't too expensive.

Have you got a taste card/used a taste card trial? If not try get a 30day trial and go to one of the places on it :)

Re the one I suggested, thats for about 12-16 seperate dishes, each dish with about 3-4 portions of something (including desert, egg tarts will blow your mind they are addicting), various things.

Just avoid chicken feet, pig intestine, brisket and duck tongue if you or your kids are squeamish.

Everything else is pretty normal on the menu for Dim Sum, or you could be boring and go for noodle and rice dishes which are more Anglicized for the unadventurous. :P

A few suggestions: most you can't book at but that fits a wandering day as you can eat when you want (perhaps with a little wait) not when you have booked. China Town is an option, I like the New World (http://newworldlondon.com/ wow, they even have a website now, that's new and clearly not finished) for dim sum (at lunch) as they bring it round on steamer trolleys so the kids can pick what they want, and it never costs much more than £10-15 a head for adults to stuff themselves.

p.s let us know where you go, I am always curious if people listen to recommendations or end up in an Angus Steak House.

Good list - only thing is, I'm not sure I'd consider Meat Liquor that child friendly!

Would also add Bone Daddies noodle bar that's just opened, really good ramen:

(don't think they have a website yet)

Icco on goodge/Charlotte st. It's probably the best pizza I have had in London.

Consider getting a free trial of a tastecard if you will be there on Sunday or during the week. Gets 50 percent or 241 in plenty of decent places.

Seriously? Every time i go there all it seems to be is a huge grease feast with poor topping quality.

The best cheap pizza type of place I've been to recently is at Camden, called 'Chicos', and there all stoned baked pizzas also.

But maybe be a bit out of the way from where your staying/visiting
