Good vodka to drink straight

On the basis of this thread, i decided to make my first foray into proper vodka drinking t'other night by picking up a bottle of Finlandia.

I was taken aback by just how easily it went down! And drinking it from the freezer is a must.

Ensure the Zubruwka comes straight from the freezer and the apple juice is nice and cold.

Tastes lovely and will have you drunk without realising it.

Poilsh rectified spirit i amazing, but be warned as you really shouldn't drink it need, even if paralytic it'll taste like you've just burned your insides! 86% last time I had it!

Alx, we need a vodka night :D

Tried it once, burnt lips and tip of tongue :p

I don't understand how anyone can drink it!

Homemade Vodka Moonshine (Bimber) on the other hand can be very nice. 60% smoother than 40% shop spirits and with that slightly applely taste.

And the same price as Smirnoff etc. It is amazing that most people I know just buy Smirnoff because it is what they are used to.

Try the Grapefruit Fusion if you see it. Lovely summer drink neat from the freezer or with tonic.

I'd rather spend the extra £4 to get Finlandia tbh, much smoother imo. Whilst I dont have to mix Russian Standard, I dont find it as nice to drink neat, so by the time I buy some mixer its almost the same price as Finlandia anyway. Plus Finlandia is, again imo, superior in cocktails.

Well after buying and going through a bottle, I think I agree. It is not a bad vodka by any means, but no where near as good as Finlandia.

Bought another English vodka, 55 Above.

Made out of potatoes and not sure I like vodka made out of potatoes, though there is a good Polish one, Luksusowa which is pretty decent. My Polish gaming mate swears by it.

The one I bought above, Brittains, was pretty basic tbh, not worth the price. Found out they import the raw spirit from Italy.

Zoladkowa Gorzka Is one of the best I have tried for people who don't like vodka, bit of an old persons drink but tastes nothing like normal vodka, its very sweet.

Zubrowka + apple juice = popular Polish drink, indeed. I can confirm at least ;-) Direct from freezer is an obvious thing, but not so obvious might be apple juice, which MUST be clear in terms of consistency. One of my first surprise when I landed in UK was... ordering apple juice in some bar, and lady brought me glass of muddy (not "transparent") liquid - then I realized it was a straight-squeezed-and-packed juice. That one doesn't mix with Zubrowka, altough it's better as single drink ;-)
This vodka contains one piece of grass that Bison use to eat (en. Bison = pl. ZUBR, hence the name ZUBR-OWKA).

Another shot worth trying - is Goldwasser. Yup, with pieces of gold inside. Tasty liquer, read it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldwasser

And Sambuca - similar style (your girls will love it):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambuca

.. or if you meet some guy who can make vodka himself (pl. BIMBER), it's most likely worth to try. Such vodka is made of SPIRIT, but it's not so "heavy" (heavier than popular 40% anyways). Depending on the rest component used to "production" it might be really tasty. WARNING: STRONG.

Finlandia, Russian Standard, Smirnoff = well.. it's just plain vodka. Buying other "model" just make sure it's made by the distillation of fermented cereal grains or potatoes, AND NOT FRUITS OR SUGAR (latest "genial" EU directive).

Best I ever had was in Bulgaria about 15 years ago - alas there was no label on the bottle and I didn't ask what it was. It had quite a sweet taste to it!

I'd be interested in picking up a decent bottle of vodka. I'm not looking for purity though, none of this 4 or 5 times distilled nonsense. I'd like something that's quite rustic, traditional and possibly made from potatoes, with a bit of flavour about it.

Can anyone recommend me something?

Luksusowa (Poland). It is the best potato vodka I have tried and it is not too expensive. Better than Chase and some other English 'premium' variants.
