Hi All,

I'm trying to find a good laptop to work and I'm getting a bit frustrated as I cannot find a place where I can search a laptop given some features... and I know that there are quite a few developers/sysadmins reading these forums :).

I'm looking for a core i7 with quad core CPU, 16gb of RAM, and a 15" scree with any screen resolution (ideally 1080, as my eyes are not that good anymore). It can also have a discrete graphics cards (as I do like playing games now and then). The reason I want that CPU+memory is because I run VMs for my development, so I want to have 8GB to run VMs, and 8GB for the OS+development environment.
I don't care about the storage, as I can replace it if necessary.

I would appreciate if anyone can recommend a laptop that matches the above.

So far I've checked the DELL range (but both the XPS and 7000 range have mixed reviews) and Lenovo Y50 range.

Thanks a lot!

Hi there

Have a look at the following :

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-165-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828

This has a i7 with 16GB memory as requested. Super thin!

This also comes with the latest 970M gpu perfect for gaming.

The screen resolution is 3k so it's 2880x1620 so will be awesome for work/play.

Comes with 2 yr full collect and return warranty.

If your budget is a little less, have a look at :

You can add 8gb memory very easily by removing the back casing (few screws). Same features as the above but a little thicker.

Any questions, do not hesitate to ask!

Thanks a lot Arjibear!

I forgot to mention that it should also be on the light side :). the GS60 looks amazing (and a bit on the expensive side) and the GT70 is on the heavy side :). I'll investigate a bit more the different MSI laptops!

Again, thanks a lot!

Hi augusto,

From reading the thread so far, doesn't sound like the graphics card is super critical for you, but chassis slimness and weight is.

Have a look at this unit;

Also, if you simply look at "P35" you will see a number of variants in the same chassis, GTX860/870 and also GTX970 version which is due very soon.

All have the ability to add the additional 8GB ram, and with flexible storage solutions that you can tailor accordingly.

Hope that's helps you on your quest to find the right unit.

Any Q's, let us know.

Thanks Atom!

That one looks quite good :). As you mentioned, the discrete graphics card is a nice to have rather than a must, and I wouldn't be playing the latest AAA titles on it anyway.

I find it a bit strange that in order to get a laptop with a good hardware I need to get a "gaming" laptop ;)

Cheers,

Hi augusto,

I guess its just the way the industry categorises this particular segment, but at Gigabyte we try to refine the design so that the units are use-able by professionals as well as Gamers.

But I understand what you say, definitely.

Another product worth considering from our range, with GTX860 card (so a step down from the P35W units) is the P34G - a 14" screen on this one, but a really nice form factor for people on the move. Also has the ability to have ram and ssd added to if you need.
