.... *shrug*

So, finally hit the 2GB VRAM limit @ 1920x1080, yes it was GTAV.

I was in need of an upgrade anyway because generally it's not really keeping up as much any more, it doesn't help that it's a poor overclocker. I've decided to get something now because i'm really getting into GTAV, and buy another later.

As for budget, looking at £400, maybe stretch to £450 as an absolute maximum to spend now and maybe the same in a couple of months time, so it's looking like a GTX 980 to me.

I am going to be sticking at 1920x1080 @ 120hz until at least January next year where i might go to 2560x1440 @ 120hz. I have no interest in 3840x2160 UHD currently due to the cost and grunt required. So this says to me that waiting and going for a single Titan X would just be silly anyway.

Thoughts?

980 SLI imho is fine for 3840x2160 UHD.

If you cant wait/afford a 980 TI then why not consider a 970 (970 SLI?)

Why not stick with it until 20nm/16nm? You have stuck it this long just a little longer and get a massive upgrade :) (then get a UHD display)

I'm uncomfortable with the GTX 970 for 2 reasons.

1. As i will be using a single card for a while, 1x GTX 970 is worse than my GTX690 in most scenarios. I'll only see a benefit in 1 game currently.
2. I am not comfortable with the 3.5GB issue. I don't want to start playing GTAV or another game in the future that starts to cache into the last 500MB and slow stuff down. Problem being, there's a big divide in whether it's an issue or not. On paper it is, but most GTX 970 users say it isn't. I don't want to take the gamble and regret it in a year's time when i'll be playing harsher games on a bigger resolution.

:p

But seriously, i am really wanting to play GTAV in all it's glory.

290x crossfire? Looking at £460 so a bit more but you'll need it.. My single 290x can't max gta :(

I was looking at the ASUS 290X DirectCU II, bargain for performance. Will i have to tinker with settings and RadeonPro to get 290X Crossfire working nicely on games though?

As a 970 owner I did notice an issue and it was annoying.

I've moved to a 980 and haven't looked back. Runs GTA V very nicely at 2560x1080

FYI.

I upgraded from SLI 670 2Gb's to a 970.

It IS an upgrade. The VRAM alone, makes it a totally different scenario and your minimums will be higher.

Add no SLI issues, less heat (big one) and noise (big one), then your soon realise the 970 is a worthy upgrade form a 690.

The 970 is perfect for my uses as I am at 1200p.

Above that I would be looking for a stronger card. 970's not great in this scenario due to reported VRAM issues, meaning that if you where to go SLI, you might be missing out on 500Mb of vram (Of which I have seen no issue and have played GTAV using 3.6Gb of VRAM)

If going over this res, 980 for SLI later or even 290x. However I personally wouldn’t get a 290x at this point as it old hat now and the 300 series is only months away.

(As for the 690 being a faster..... I’m not sure. In BF4, I remember getting split second pauses when there was a lot of action on the screen and I did a sharp turn. As soon as I installed my 970, I was blown away. It all felt so fast!)

If Heaven 4.0 benchmark is anything to go by:

Score 1667, GPU 970 @1550/2103, CPU 4790k @4.9, Danidasanic
Score 1822, GPU 690 @1006/1702, CPU 3930k @4.6, Rossi~

That's a heavily overclocked 970 (the highest scoring here) vs my very poorly overclocked GTX 690 (it's 24/7 clocks by the way).

I don't get any SLI issues at all with my GTX690, i forget it has 2 GPUs sometimes. This has been talked about before, most probably something to do with the PLX chip onboard.

980 all the way imo if you want to do it now, i would not go 970 imo if you thinking sli in the future, Personally i love the fact i dont have a heater in my room for the summer. sli 290 does kick out some serious heat

The world of gaming will seem a different place once you have 4gb of VRAM to play with.

You are basing your judgment of the gtx970 on heaven 4.0 benchmark ??

What about real games? I had a Gigabyte GTX690 which I sold 4 a gtx970 and I saw a improvement in fps all at 1080p. ☺

I can base it on several things, mainly reviews. Most (if not all) benchmarks will show the GTX690 ahead at 1920x1080  (if they bother to include it in their reviews that is!).
