Ok, so a while back i installed vista x64 on my smaller 200gb drive, and i kept xp x86 on my main 400gb hdd, now however i want to get rid of xp completely and put my installation of vista on the 400gb drive, then i will be able to format my 200gb drive and keep this as my backup drive (as i had in xp)

i just want to know how i would go about this as i dont know how i could "uninstall?" xp without messing up the boot sequence that vista pops up when i boot

Vista = on 200GB but you want it on the 400GB

XP = on the 400GB but you want it gone?

Ok, you are going to need to reinstall Vista anyway, so take the 200GB out, set it to SLAVE, set the 400GB to master, install Vista to that and then put the 200GB back in when its done...

You can then set about deleting the junk files you dont need from both drives.

So i need to re=install vista :( bugger, was hoping a program like true image or ghost could sort this out for me, or would that keep the boot file and cause complications?

Not sure actually.

I know that the MBR can be on one drive and Windows can be on another, and if thats happened, then no matter what you do, you will need a reinstall anyway.

Dotn be scared of a reinstall... I do it every couple of months just for the hell of it. In fact, This PC Im on now, isnt even finished yet cos I am reinstalling onto it right as we speak.... I have not installed the Video drivers yet.

i do usually re-format and re-install around every 6 moths but it's just such a pain, i guess if this is my only option though then i will do it, looks like i will need to spend a few hours tomorrow getting everything right again :(

copy the data you want from the xp drive to the vista one

now use acronis true image (or even vista backup) to make an image of the vista drive, save it on a 3rd drive -say a usb2 drive or something, then use acronis/backup to restore that image to the bigger hard drive

then vistabootpro will be able to remove the xp entry from the startup

If I understand the OP correctly, the boot loader will be on the xp drive. Doing the above will result the boot loader being lost completely. You could restore the boot loader by booting from the Vista DVD and running a repair but it may be easier just to re-install Vista from scratch.
