This might be one for Gibbo.

I just got back from the launch of the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, and between all the marketing BS and buzz words there was actually a very useful test: Back to back track driving, in both the wet and dry of the F1 A2, Bridgestone S001 and Conti Sport Contact 5P.

Identical cars (Audi A7), same tyre pressures, same tread depth, same track.

There was very little grip wise between the tyres in the dry. I've not gone through my data yet but I couldn't tell you which offered the most dry grip in the corners. In the wet the difference was a bit more obvious, with Goodyear just edged it in the wet over the Conti, and the Bridgestone last.

There was a far more noticeable difference subjectively.

The Goodyear offered by far the best feedback, steering response and linearity of the 3. The Conti offered fairly good feedback, but it didn't turn in at all well, and the Bridgestone turned a little better than the Conti but offered so little feedback it was hard to tell what was going on.

This opinion was shared by nearly everyone I spoke to.

I didn't really like the original F1 A, and I really wanted to like the Conti 5P but after trying them all on identical cars, I'm sold on the Goodyear.

Here's the first part of the write up if anyone wants further reading:

Sounds like a marked improvement then!

Have you had any experience with the soon to be released Michelin Super Sports? Seems to be plenty of hype about them.

Not yet, though I'm meant to be in May. I've spoken to people who make the launch and they said they really are that good.

I have a client who was at the launch and he came away feeling they were an improvement on the PS2's. He rated them very highly, as the price would suggest!

Good thing about them is I can now pick up a set of PS2's for about £770 in my sizes where as it used to be c. £950 minimum.

All sounds very promising, i found the Asymmetrics better than the Sessantas and the FK452's worse than everything in the wet.

I was all set to go back to Asymmetrics but I'm really looking forward to trying out the Asymmetric 2's.

Are the sidewalls still far too soft?

That's the problem I found with them, gave you good amounts of feel...but when that feeling is that of extreme flobbery it didn't feel nice! Also I didn't find the wear rate all that good either.

Of course all dependant on type of driving and car type too!

Same reason I didn't like the original F1 A. These seem to be much better, at least in the size I was running. Certainly better than the competitors.

Ah, this would explain why i've been unable to get any Assymetrics recently. Any idea on when they'll be avaliable to buy? Going to need a full set in the next month or so.

Interesting information, I need 4 new tyres soon and was going to get CS3s. Do you have any information on the rumored CS5s that are to replace the CS3s ?

Last I heard it was Q1 this year. Conti did the basic launch at the end of last year so the tyres are in production.

Soon. I will confirm dates soon.

Without a doubt, the Eagle F1s were a better 'performance' tyre compared to the CS3s so not surprised that the 2nd version is better than the CS5s. Whether that makes it a better overall tyre remains to be seen.

Available in my size at launch: 225/40R18 XL 92 Y :-)
