Google account age verification

This is only for watching certain videos on Youtube.

But that's not the same thing. That age-verification by login has been there for ages. What I have seen is age verification by passport for watching certain Youtube videos. Again, I have only seen this in Europe, not the UK.

A VPN would confirm.

It's in the UK, age verification on certain Youtube videos by credit card or passport.

God, that's awful.

How come the UK gov tried to do this with porn and they failed but Google can?

I would say it was because it's only one firm but Mindgeek is still one firm.

Yeah it's stupid, my account is 12+ years old as well, I guess Google think I made it when I was 5.

But yeah VPN outside of the UK/EU and it's fine.

Just to let you know your sig isn't loading because your website doesn't have a valid SSL cert. You need to put sigs over SSL now. :) They don't load on some hosts.

also your website is broken.

Cheers for the heads up, I mostly browse on mobile so never see the sigs anyway, also there is no website there, I just use it for forum image hosting etc. SSL seems somewhat excessive for that kind of content but I’ll look into sorting it when I get the chance.

It's just a way for Google to collect everyone's passport/driving licence/etc details.

/tinfoilhat ;)

I had this the other day, i'm surprised they couldn't just see that I'd used a credit card for years for my google play account.

Whilst computer systems are very intelligent, in a lot of cases they lack what would appear to be some basic intelligence. To you and I it would almost seem common sense that there is an age-restricted card that has the same registered name as the account owner and that would suffice as proof of age.

Is it not though? It's the most valuable document a person can give and now Google want it from 'certain people' [soon, everyone].

It was unnecessary for years, and now people are just going to give theirs away en masse.

lol, good point.

I'm sure as a kid i would either look for whatever it was i was searching for and find it within minutes elsewhere... same if any other site asked for age verification

This is only for watching certain videos on Youtube. You won't be asked just for creating an account.
you will if you want a childs account apparently they want an adults credit card to confirm your a parent or some twaddle.

I thought it was a joke since adult accounts don't need that.... then I googled about it....

I've just received an email too. I'd prefer that they didn't see my signature so I might scribble on the one on the driving licence and send that.

What happens if I do nothing? What features are withheld if any?

Thanks

They might not be alowed to share that data, even "internally".

Or maybe there's some legal wording they need explicit confirmation it's your card for age, but it could be just "authorised to use", say your mums for the play store. So they want to be sure to cover them selves

Quite annoying YouTube wise as I have a long standing, verified account which is my main account but won't let me view age restricted content (without going through extra hoops) as the account status is as a "brand" account despite my Google account which is tied to it being verified and able to watch age restricted content so I have to switch accounts and remember to switch back to watch certain videos :s

I can kind of see the point though as multiple people could have access to a brand account who might not themselves be of the same age, etc. as the account.

I think I used my credit card to verify. It did it instantly.

I can't remember if they made a transaction. Usually companies that require a credit/bank card do. But I can't remember if it happened with Google.
