Had my own domain for the best part of 6 months now, and recently i've had a few bouncebacks when usig the 'POP3' email account that came with the hosting.

I've started looking into using Google Apps. So i can use my Custom domain with a reputable email system.

Does anyone here use them for personal use? If so, how they finding them?

Also, do you actually need to be a registered business? or doesnt that matter?

The email side of it works just like gmail, so you shouldn't have any problems.

No, you don't need to be a registered business, I've been taking advantage since they gave five users away for free.

Use Google Apps for a couple of domains and it works perfect, nice integration with gmail/calendar/play store and so on.

Zoho I have heard is good also.

I also heard some good things about Zoho but when I tried to use them I found the service to have reliability issues and the support was practically non existent. This was on some paid for business accounts so it wasn't acceptable but if you were on the free plan I guess it could be ok.

I've been using Google Apps for email for a few months and it's been great and the support is excellent. My only criticism would be that the imap email migration tool doesn't work but they seem to be trying to fix it.

I'm also trying out Rackspace hosted email, so I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried that.

Use it in work, seems more reliable than the old Exchange account and its much easier to work your calenders and contacts on your mobile.

I'm using email hosting from namecheap, can't say i've had any issues and its about massively cheaper than gapps. I've just got a gmail account which polls the pop3 account as you have.

Cheaper than gapps? I've got a domain email setup with gapps and it's free. Have they started charging for new users?

Google Apps hasn't had a free tier for probably five years now. It's £3.30 per month per account though, it's hardly going to bankrupt someone.

My favourite aspect of Google Apps is that can remotely control my Android devices that are signed in with my account for extra security in case they're stolen or lost (then again probably available on the free service?).

You can also set device policies for encryption and other services/apps if required depending on how complicated you want to make it (e.g. disable Google Plus or Drive). I'm currently using a Nexus 9 and OnePlus X if it's of any interest. With two-factor authentication I can setup individual apps with passwords (on my desktop/laptop) using their app generation page for extra device security.

Business-wise, other than a billing snafu last year when they changed tax rules I've not had a problem with using it as a personal account I just had to change the form when Google sent me the e-mail. If I remember correctly the "snafu" was just Google not informing their personal domain users in advance of the tax change, not that it mattered for UK billing though.

I'd check in advance your domain registrar's help files on setting up Google Apps for MX and txt/spf records, though again the Google setup pages can help with advising on changes required.

So i take it they must have kept the original free accounts active then? Or is mine just a forgotten one?

If you had a free account then you keep it, but you can't increase the user count and don't get new features added. And obviously there's no support.
