Google Chrome OS.. anyone else intrigued?

Very promosing, everything they do is well executed. There's already something similar to this JoliCloud, but I don't think it loads in seconds like Google are aiming for.

Just lol at some of the replies in that thread.. "Google will hurt themselves" "Google have no experience of cross platform development"

epic lols.

heh :)

what they need is a clean simple os with little scope for breaking by a novice user

they'd need for instance 'itunes' support to be a market hit, and printer drivers could be a tough one to tackle

When have Google had experience of cross platform development of an OS?

Their web based services are about standardisation and abstraction away from the hardware, they've basically built and geo diverse super computer which all of their apps run across.

The closest they've come is building Android which would have extremely specific hardware requirements.

What exactly do you mean by cross platform development of an OS? I don't think that really makes sense in this context...

They are developing Chrome for ARM and x86 CPUs, its using a Linux kernel and a new windowing system, I don't see cross-platform development being an issue here? It wont be too much of a challenge for them to develop and compile for two CPU architectures. The challenge will be usability and making everything fit together nicely, which they do have experience with.

I'm looking forward to it, and I think they will make a very good job of it. The whole concept of building an OS around people who pretty much just use the web is something ive been interested in.

They have plenty of cross platform OS development experience.. they built their own OS to run their search engine which uses second hand parts salvaged from car boot sales.

I disagree, I think they should aim at mid-advanced users, as the standard novice user is likely to stick to windows. It's only advanced users who change OS's regularly, etc.

LOL what decade was that in ;)
LOL what decade are you living in to think Google are completely new to development, and aren't, in fact, comprised of developers from every walk of life, including pioneering developers from various fields, such as Linux Kernel Developers, Microsoft OS developers, and Apple developers?

Oh, that's right, The Brand 'Google' is new to OS development, so that simply *MUST* mean they are utterly incompetent.

These users are going to be pulled in when they see a £200 notebook, that will let them browse the internet in a few seconds, check their email or write a quick document. And because it's all web based, the spec of the machine won't make the device seem slow. Like it would if you tried to load Word, Excel and Outlook on the same machine.

I'm intrigued. It was about time to be honest, and if any company has a good chance of introducing a new operating system Google has.

I don't think it will be a "Windows killer" by a long shot though, on the desktop at least.

Eagerly awaiting more details.

I think its just going to be a portal to Google's "Cloud" apps; Google Docs, GMail, etc. It isnt going to be ground breaking.

Standard build - it will come with Gnome interface, chrome browser, bundled picasa and a fancy splash screen on a 2.6 Kernel. I hope i am wrong, i hope they write something beautiful with something which can run .NET and DX10 seamlessly for emulating Windoze apps.

I'd dump it on my netbook - with google behind it will probably end a bit cleaner to use than ubuntu :D

I thought it was going to be using a new windowing system that isn't X, which would rule out Gnome etc? I do think you're right with regards to it being Googlecentric, it's in no way going to be a revolution but it's probably going to do what it set out to do well.

Excellent stuff. This will also help to give Linux a leg-up in the desktop market. Also, the "Android Market" of Chrome OS should be good :)

I wonder whether the Adobe components will be open source?

This is good news for consumers imo.
