Google Drive

I am not talking about specific features of GDrive or any other cloud storage system. My point is quite simple - Of all the posts surrounding this new service (or any cloud storage just now for that matter), the majority of the people seem to be looking at 1 factor and then coming to an opinion of one service being better than another i.e. how much space you get for free.

There is no mention of:

Support
Compatibility
Speeds
Device Integration

etc etc

The example I tried to give was this:

Imagine I setup a cloud storage system which offered 500GB of storage for free yet the infrastructure is so poor that upload speeds are restricted to 10Kbps or I restricted it to be used for Windows 7 only.

Using people's criteria above - my service would be amazing as it gave you HUGE free storage yet, when taking everything else into account, it is pretty pish...

Yes, effectively most people are happy just to use a cloud system as a big virtual drive but there may be other things to consider than just "how much free space do I get before I need to pay"

p.s. I HAVE used cloud storage before.

Oh right, I got confused by the part where you said "I haven't used any of them (GDrive, SkyDrive etc) so couldn't tell you the differences e.g. app integration etc".

As I've said before all people will want is a folder on their desktop and a client for their mobile devices which we know exist (for PC, Mac, Android and soon iOS). If the speeds are bad enough to be a problem (and there is absolutely zero suggestion that this would be the case) then people will continue to use Dropbox or another reliable service. Comparing it to some cloud storage you set up at home is laughable to say the least!

But I fear this discussion is going nowhere because you're like a dog with a bone so I'm out. ;)

Is this still known as cloud computing? I remember a service back in 1999 called X Drive, where you had 1GB of online storage, mappable to drive letter X. Is is much different these days? Just wondered, since 'the cloud' has been a buzzword in recent years.

For anyone with a Google Apps account that is still waiting for activation, try removing any existing sync software you have in place for Docs. I was using SyncDocs to sync my local HDD with Docs. Within 30 seconds of uninstalling it, I received my activation mail.

Google drive is a rip off!

I'd upgraded my Google Storage 80GB and I paid 20$ per year. Now that price plan is 60$

OLD - Per Year
20 GB - $5
80 GB - $20
200 GB - $50
400 GB - $100
1 TB - $256
2 TB - $512
4 TB - $1024
8 TB - $2048
16 TB - $4096

NEW
Pricing structure (prices are monthly)
25 GB - $2.49
100 GB - $4.99
200 GB - $9.99
400 GB - $19.99
1 TB - $49.99
2 TB - $99.99
4 TB - $199.99
8 TB - $399.99
16 TB - $799.99

Thankfully I can stay on 80GB and renew for only 20$ per year

I reiterate that the app is really poor. It effectively limits your phone to consumption. Saving something you received on your phone to the drive is a royal ball ache
.

Where is my ability to choose files to upload from folders on the phone? Why can't I set up auto upload for certain phone folders? So irritating.

I can't even select multiple files for upload.

I upgraded my google account to 20GB for $5 per year mainly for Picasa a while ago, glad this has now passed on to Google drive so I now get 25GB for $5 per year :), more than enough for me.

mine's the same. i got 80 gigs for picasa and in spite of using20gigs of that space, gdrive says i have 87gigs left :D

Are there any plans for an iOs client?

So far the Dropbox client is great, the Skydrive one is ok, and the Box.net one is pretty useless.

I use Dropbox mostly as it's so easy to upload stuff from various apps.

Although.... a thrid the price of Dropbox? Yeah, terrible!

I almost cried when I realised I could have grandfather'd myself in like this. I'm on the 20 gig for $5 a year, but the 80 gig or 200 gig was AMAZING value if you signed up before the price changes.

As it stands, it's still pretty cheap, but if I 'upgrade' I lose my real cheap 20 gig forever... :(

OK maybe I'm being dumb but do I actually have to upload phone photos one by one from my phone. Why the hell have Google not done their own version of photostream?

This is a painfully deficient process

I don't know what photostream is, but I thought Google+ gives you the same service? Uploads a photo as soon as it's taken? Then available from any PC or phone...

There is an option in the Google Drive app to upload photos while charging so they are there for all you devices.

Google Drive is just Google Docs updated and renamed. So pretty well integrated I would say.

Can anyone tell me how I can download an icon image from Drive on my phone to use on my SGS2. With Dropbox you get an option to export to SD card, so if I export an icon I can then select it via the phone's gallery. But I can't see how to do that with Drive.

You get the option to make the file available offline but that just saves it to a hidden folder so it doesn't appear in the gallery. If I open the image in Drive, I get the option to share but no option to save.

Is it possible to save files for local use? Bit of a ball ache if I can't. Same with music files, I can open them directly from Drive and they'll download and play, but if I go into my music player afterwards the song is no longer available locally.
