Google Fiber

What are the speeds of current hard drives? (In MB/s I mean)

A very quick google says that the Samsung F3 1TB gets an average of 208MB/sec writing and 138MB/sec reading, with higher write speeds for larger files. I would be quite interested to see speed comparisons of different filesystems; NTFS, EXT3/4, BTRFS, Reiser4 etc.

I don't think 'everyday punters' would be able to tell that it wasn't running at full capacity. Raises an interesting point though, just because the hard drive write speed is lower than the potential download speed would that actually lower the download speed? Is stuff like that not stored in RAM before being written?

Depends on how the user has his or her computer set up. In a standard scenario a downloaded file is wirtten to disk at a temporary location (usually browser cache) as it is downloaded then moved to the chosen location wherever the user told the browser to download it to.

So yeah, the download speed would slow down to the limit of the disk being written to as it can't physically download faster than that. RAM is not used for this purpose.

So that should be fine for handling its top speed shouldn't it?

I admit it's going a little over my head, so forgive me if I'm talking utter gibberish :p

Join Virgin Media^^ :p

Used to be with them. Never got much higher than 0.5Mbps. Switched to O2 and consistently get 6Mbps. They kicked up such a fuss when we left as well, kept charging even though they'd said many times before that it was sorted.

It's pretty hard finding a single location to really get that fast a download speed when not actively out to use it/find one, a lot of common gamer/internet user stuff was hard pressed to get close to max when I last used a 1Gbit line.
In fact, we had to use multiple servers that a bunch of us owned to really give it the beans, stuff like steam, etc etc didn't really use much of it.

Of course though, when it comes to downloading lots of stuff at once and not queued and multiple users etc, Wooopa!

All looks good, but the website seems awfully . . . Apple-like? Even the language that is used seems Apple-ish. I mean short. Snappy. Sentences :p

We need a company to do that in the uk. Make it easy to show interest as a community and I'm sure many places would be profitable.

Also where does it say 1000, all it said in Tge advert was 100x fast than the average American which is probably like 1.

I like the fact that Google is taking the rug out from the telecomms industry in the US. I think its great for the average consumer who sometimes are stuck with one ISP. Could you image being stuck with TalkTalk? I think this country has a better ecosystem in terms of ISP competition, not by much though as we still have some of the worst internet speeds in the EU.
