Google Home

How did you ask about the beef Wellington?

I said "Hey Google, what's Beef Wellington"
I then also tried "Hey Google, what is a beef wellington" just to match what you had written. On both occasions it gave me a quick description of beef wellington according to Wikipedia.

I wonder if she doesn't like my voice.

Thanks for help

Just a thought. Maybe check the 'my activity' section in the Google Home app. This will show what you've asked and the response. At least that way you can see if she just isn't understanding your voice.

Engadget review of the Google Home Max is out today and they say
  • Expensive, especially for a stereo pair
  • Somewhat limited streaming service selection (but at least it has Spotify)
  • There's not much else about the Home Max that's visually remarkable.
  • The Google Assistant doesn't support nearly as many music services as Sonos

(It actually looks great, but come on sesevans, please stop it in these threads)

As I said elsewhere, you never get any negative, which kind of invalidates his opinion to me, which is a shame as he clearly has a lot of knowledge about these things.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but why can’t I access shortcuts or get IFTTT to work with google home mini?
They work fine on my iPhone with google assistant but it seems impossible to link the two.

Since IFTTT works on Google Home, it will work on Google Home Mini. I have for example set up IFTTT to work on Google Home.

On this general topic of increased GA compatibility, perhaps it is very timely that Google has now launched the Assistant SDK in more countries, including the UK, Germany and Japan so I expect to see GA built in to many more use cases natively rather than having to indirectly set up the use (IFTTT for example).

It will be interesting to see if Google Assistant is a bigger feature than last year when CES starts on 9 Jan in Las Vegas.

fixed that for you

HAHA! fair play but Fairly, if you are going to correct me then I'd recommend you don't leave your post so grammatically incorrect and open to abuse. Because...you know... potkettleblack.

Anyway, only the worthy make that exclusive list. Don't be jealous :)

is there a way to say "ok google, goodnight" and it does a load of actions, turn off lights etc?

IFTTT will do that.

Enjoying the stereo sound from a couple of Google Home units today as Chopin's Piano Concerto No 1 in E Minor plays elegantly in the background. Meanwhile, reading The Black Widow by Daniel Silva. Blissful Xmas day.

Thinking of upgrading the quality of the sound and seriously considering the Google Home Max when it launches early next year.

I would suggest shortcuts but I'm not sure if you can do more than one action in a shortcut?

Check 'Yonomi' app. I'm fairly sure that can do 'macros'.

Not to be pedantic, more to check I'm not missing out, but it's not actual stereo is it? It's the same sound duplicated, right?

Got my Aunt and Mum Google Home Mini's for Xmas and I was surprised how much my Aunt was enjoying it, asking it all kinds of questions. We even had a quick family quiz 'Hey Google, play a game'.

Yes, AndyCR15, you are correct in that it is not "actual stereo" but to my (I assume) untrained ear, it sounds like stereo when positioned at opposite ends of a room and was a better sound than a single GH playing. This is really why I want to try out the GH Max when it reaches these shores as the sound quality should be really good and the built-in AI feature automatically measures up the room to reach an optimal sound.

I was amused at your description of the reactions of your Aunt to your GH Mini purchase. And I thought of your experience when I saw this article from Venture Beat of the reaction the author got when he introduced GH to his parents' home at Xmas, with the parents being not very tech savvy. I think you will enjoy reading it. By the way I think Google should simplify the set up of GH for such non-tech savvy people and I would not be at all surprised if in 2018 Google takes such steps to make set up easier:

Thinking some more about the audio, I should be able to get the sound to play through the television and as I have surround sound speakers in the room, I should get a higher quality sound that the simultaneous play of two speakers.

Why not just get a chromecast audio and plug that into the speakers and have Google home play music through that. Is what I do with my mini. No need for the max other than the microphones being better on the max there's nothing else I see improvement

Yeah agreed. My Mini is connected to a CCA into my separates hifi. Sounds great. We only play radio in the morning of a working week when we just want something for 20mins whilst we eat breakfast (and can't be faffed to turn on the stereo).

Can anyone confirm that Home won't work with my Gsuite calendar? Seems to let me do reminders but won't read my calendar for toffee. Keeps saying I should retrain my voice
