Just wondering why I cant change my email in my CP to my Google mail account, it says email is banned ?
 
You have to have an ISP, hosting or subscription based email. It keeps from having rogues creating multiple accounts and ruining the forums. Some people have been given special dispensation, however they tend to be long time members or trusted members of the OcUK community.
 
ah cr@p just checked my email and i used my uni address that i never even used while i was at uni and i graduated 3 years ago. so if anyones ever tried contacting me in the last 5 years i'm sorry i've not been ignoring you lol

so you didn't get any of my love notes then? :(

i like the isp email idea, keeps this place nice and safe. Been to other forums that struggle to keep up because as soon as they ban someone, they get a new email, new account, and straight back again

What's stopping me doing the same with my hosting and ISP's? I potentially have an infinite amount of addresses to spam with. :p

(yes, ISP's ;))

if your isp's give you unlimited emails then i guess you have the ability to spam, but afaik thats a rarething, most o would have thought would get like 5 emails addresses.

Well, there is a limit iirc, but I can delete boxes and then re-create another in it's place.

yeah thats true, hmm... interested to hear what ocuk have to say about that.

the only thing i can think of is that if you use your isp email you aren't going to want to delete the email address just to re-register with ocuk but then all you need is one free address left to keep deleting remaking another
 
This would really help me as the email I have set up only gets spam and is these forums are the only thing that keeps me from having it setup!
 
Gmail and most other webmail services we are aware of are banned for two reasons.

1: The number of spammers who use them.
2: Banned users who sign up again take a bit longer, and it's more effort for them to try and sign up repeatedly.

Whenever the list is lost/disabled for whatever reason (such as for a couple of days after the last software update) we get a marked increase in spammers signing up (or at least trying to).
It's a similar reason to why we have to check all new users manually :/
 
Now that Gmail has gotten IMAP it's really shining :)

Free email accounts = bad for forums.
