I'm off to Italy soon and am tempted by paying £5 to t-mobile to give me 20mb of data for 7 days. I think I'd mainly use it for Google maps, plus the odd email and fb. I can judge how much data I'd use for email etc.. but will google maps just eat that up in no time?

i thought the later versions of maps allowed you to cache data, as in your could set the cache high, load all the data for the area your looking at and then it would be already available?

Google maps do cache downloaded data so you could try downloading some before you go or at a hotspot when you are there. Just by a roadmap. :D
