Google maps navigation on Desire

Just got my desire yesterday and was hoping the google nav would be a credible alternative to actually buying a new satnav.

I tested it out on a 3 mile journey today [worked great] and according to netcounter it downloaded about 1200kb over the 3G connection. Extrapolate that, and a ten mile journey equates to about 4000kb.

I'm concerned it could eat up my allowance pretty quick on a so-called "unlimited data" Orange panther plan.

Can the maps be downloaded in advance onto SD card? I think the only alternatives are payware, am I right?

Thanks.

;)

Cant be downloaded onto the SD card, however you can download the route whilst in a wifi area (say your home) then as long as you dont deviate from the directions it gives it will use no data

You're over-doing the problem a bit I think mate, doesn't your plan have 750mb? The much bigger problem is the other widgets usually :) Check the android market for the orange account app (only way I know how to find it is find Orange Wednesdays app and then "find apps by this author") if you want to keep a close eye on your data / minutes.
