Google Maps updated to allow local storing of maps

Its brilliant timing for me, off to Chicago, New Orleans, and various cities in Texas next week. I've pre downloaded all the maps for the various areas so I'm good to go now.

How do I roll back on a desire?

I ask as this update doesn't seem as good as thought, the whole download thing lasting 30 days and now its more of a pain to get sat nav working when already used it - the old "next destination" box has been changed to a "report a problem with this destination etc"

I think roaming/abroad guys are missing something else. Google navigation does routing "in cloud". It sends your in point and destination over the net and receives instructions with route back over the net. It doesn't route or reroute locally on your phone. Any time you hit detour, any time your gps signal is weak enough to misplace you one street away, any time you take a wrong turn it will need to call home. This is gonna cost you while roaming.

Additionally, google mapping doesn't understand toll zones. With "avoid tools" ticked, it will still route through congestion charge in London, and lead you through Dartford Crossing. You don't want this to happen on foreign soil, in rented car without understanding of their anpr, prepaid, display or electronic tagging systems and penalties for entering taxed or toll zones. Get proper sat nav, they're only what - £100 per country?

When I download a map, it downloads fine, I then switch to flight mode and switch off data... I select 2 points within that downladed area to navigate to, but all it does is constantly load the directions and never completes

but as soon as you switch data/wifi back on it loads, surely thats defeating the whole object!

what am I doing wrong?

This has some amazing implications for use with Flight Simulator X. Google earth used to be the best earth tile service you could use with Tileproxy but for some reason they slapped a restriction on the service meaning you couldn't use it to overlay meshes in FSX any more.

Happy Days.

from what someone said a few posts back i think it's not meant for navigation (possibly because of teleatlas restrictions or it's too new) as the working out is done with data connection. you can view your destination but the phone hasn't got the tech to work out best way to get there.

ahh buggery, pretty much pointless then

well give it time. been out only a week plus it's free, plus i think there biggest competition for sat navs, tom tom, own the maps google uses so they'll be wanting to restrict things like this as much as possible. see what happens as it does serve a purpose for when people are on holiday and perhaps know the destination but want to have the smaller side roads etc loaded in case they get lost at least they then have something to fall back on.

Google navigation still needs a data connection.. the routing system is done though the data connection not by the phone...

the only good thing about the downladed area feature is u can view a area without a data connection, only that.

tbh i don't see the Google navigation changing for a free feature
