Google sync. Is it tied to your sim or particular make and model of your phone. I just replaced my phone expecting all my data to be implemented from Google but nothing happened. I gave my other phone to my sister so I'm assuming Google back up etc is now working on the wrong phone.

It's tied to your Google account, just signing in with your account on the new phone should be all that's required.

On most phones you can choose whether to have your contacts locally on the phone or with your google account. Obviously if they were just on the phone, you won't have them on the new phone.

I mistakenly assumed it backed up apps and photos. At least I backed up the photos on the pc.

It doesn't back up app data, but it does remember which apps you had installed so will auto install them on any device you log into to. A pain if you're just borrowing a mate's phone for the evening.

It doesn't back up any photos at all unless you've added them to picassa, or google+ but that's not really backing up.

That's my problem, it didn't :(

Edit: Sorted. Just logged in Google account to see them all there and reinstalled manually. It's as I suspected. Many of the apps, including Google Play are still running on my other phone so I have two phones using the one account lol.

It does to an extent. It will automatically reinstall your apps from the Play Store, and you can have your photos saved to Google+
