How many of us have got mates, workmates, family etc who think Google is some super secret website?
How many of us have questions asked us every day where we give the answer "Google it" only for a question to come back "How?".
Every day at work one of my colleagues will ask some question or other and even though they've been all over the net, I'll find what they want after 2 seconds Googling.
I've put it has a favourite on 5 PC's but still they spend ages typing things in the URL guessing on sites. eg www.plasticfences.co.uk etc.
I come along, type plastic fences into Google and its as though I'm Paul Daniels.
The other day my mate had spent an hour looking for something.
"What you looking for?"
"A picture of a boat"
Me types boat into Google Images - "There you go"
"Amazing"

When I find what they're after they affectionally call me Mr Google as though I've got the power.

On here we see many threads asking :
Anybody know the lyrics for ...........
Anybody got the chords for ...........
What is the song with lyrics that go .........
Who was the actor in ............. etc etc etc
Google the bloody thing.

There is the other way around -
I've recently found a workmate who actually thinks Google is the internet and he types out URL's in Googles search box.

So, do some of you have family/friends who think you are dead clever and have the power of Google?

its not just friends, its countless people online, including a lot of people who post here!

I think there's a skill to using search engines to find exactly what you want. Those who know how to contruct a well formed search string don't think twice about it whereas those who can't probably don't see just how invaluble google is.

Yep, pretty much all the things you mention has happened to me.

Specifically the "Google is the internet". I have a hard time trying to explain to my dad the difference between the ADDRESS BAR and the SEARCH BOX on google (or any website forms for that matter).

"I want a holiday resort website" - My dad starts guessing addresses such as "holidayresorts.com" and "holidays.com", then is confused why they bring up american websites or they don't exist.

I explain to him that you can use google to search for keywords that will help him find websites but he always forgets. So then he types addresses into google.

I can understand this for people who don't use computers/internet much, but for people on here who clearly know what google is and have plenty experience of the internet, it can annoy me a bit.

You've also got the other side of the coin where my 70 year old mum thinks that internet knows everything eg
"Go on that internet thing and see what parcel I've got coming my house on thursday".

This is absolutely infuriating. It's worrying, the amount of people I get who ring up to say they can't access their university webmail because the page is down when in fact they've typed the URL into Google. It doesn't matter how many times you ask them to clarify where they've typed the address, they'll manage to talk around it like it's me that isn't making sense. The most annoying one recently was a woman that I asked a number of times whether she was using Internet Explorer, she even told me it said Internet Explorer at the top of the screen. When she finally got into the website she told me it said 'Do you want Firefox to remember your password?'. I'm clenching my fist now just thinking about it!

why bother "googling" it when I can get one of you to do it for me and link me?

I can see that quote being used against you in the future if you need any help finding something online. ;)
