GoPro Karma Drone

That is just the point, the risk is much higher since the product was flawed and thus discontinued.

Out of interest do you know why it was recalled?

It was an issue with the clasp on the battery, allowing it to move out of place and the drone to lose power.

What does it fly like? Must be great video with a GoPro.

Depends what you want I guess? I'm just looking for a stable platform for aerial shots and video and it seems easy to control. Most of the reviews say it's also very easy to fly in comparison to some of the others, and the camera stabiliser is one of the better ones on the market.

It obviously has it's limitations, like lack of optical sensors for near ground work, anti collision sensors (which are apparently a bit hit and miss on most drones anyway, but would be useful with the follow me option) and the battery life is a bit short. GoPro are also having financial issues (shedding non core assets, such as the drones) so for how long there will be new spare parts/warranty is another question - although they claim they are providing support for the foreseeable future and it's unlikely they will go under completely.

It also lacked basic anti-collision sensors as well.
To be fair so did the first three generations of dji drones but that didn’t stop people buying them and flying them. I had the pro 3 which cost over a grand. No collision sensors at all. And yes I crashed it more than once.

Except this is 2018, hence 1st gen product.

It is way behind on the competition now, it’ll be akin saying Canon can bring out a crap mirrorless camera because Sony’s first A7 back in 2013 or something was crap and people still bought them.

Except the op is proposing spending 100 dollars on the 1st gen product so seems reasonable.

Fair game for buying op, if you was buying a gimbal etc anyway and for another £100 or whatever you get the Karma as well, then why not.

Yes, the Mavic is better, but seeing as you aren't necessarily interested in the drone atm then it makes sense to do what you've done. Otherwise you could have spent £1200 on a Mavic, not had your gimbal, then not want to fly anyway!
