Hi all,

I quite enjoy the quality of the video produced by the GoPro4 but am not impressed by the microphone quality, the sound is what I'd describe as tinny? I would also like to have some sort of external battery arrangement.

Has anyone got any personal recommendations for anything that they use or have used?

Thanks.

Have you looked on to youtube? Lots of mics tested out on there. Poor/average sound recorded by the internal mic is to be expected considering it is an action camera.

If you want really decent sound your best off using an external mic - with a tascam audio recorder or something but thats going to be 3-4 times the size of the go pro.

You can buy plenty of generic go pro mics which will sound better but not great, they are all designed to be small - defo better than built in - but you have to set your expectations realistically

External batteries - again, as big or as small as you like - I use go pros mostly for static recording so have no issue with a 20000mah brick sized battery powering it, but I use external recorders for audio and just let the go pro record audio as normal then sync with higher quality sound.

It all depends on WHERE AND HOW you will use the go pro.

Another option is - if the go pro will be within arms reach of you is, again a sound recorder with a high quality lav mic on your collar - this will pick up general audio well and also if u want to talk in the video it will produce good quality audio - this is the most 'mobile' option - but its really only aimed at vloggers who are talking on camera.

My vlog setup is the lavalier microphone plugged into a Tascam DR-05 - my camera is either go pro or Sony NEX 5R - and I have a metal mount bar the sony sits on with a Tascam DR-05 on that ALSO and SMX-10 Mic (have it layin around and its good quality mic)

So when I go to edit I sync the camera with the TWO audio recorders then just choose which has the best audio quality for that situation.

Depends on how much trouble you want to go to - its annoying the Sony / go pro doesnt have proper mic support, but, with the audio recorders I can record 16 or 24bit wav files with very high quality and no hiss at all - just pure quality audio.

Many thanks for the input.

To be honest, the GoPro cameras that I use are my brother's and they are mostly used inside the car, with some uses externally (wind not a factor).

I'm not after amazing sound quality, but what I do want is a microphone that can pickup the sound of a car properly without going tinny or crackling from loud volumes. I will not be vlogging or talking to the microphone so the position can vary. Likewise with the battery I guess!

My old 1080 cameras had some great mics, could really withstand loud volumes and reproduce them clearly.

I will have to pick up some generic go pro mics and see what they pick up from the inside of the car for comparison as I really do enjoy the quality of these GoPros at 4k.

Cant help with the mic, but for batteries I used Smatree and Wasabi and always found them on par with the official batteries. Just need to wait for them to decode the batteries for the 5 and I'll be buying the same brands again.

I run a gopro3+ in my track car running off the car charger and use a audio technica atr-3350 as external mic. Not used it a great deal as the car has been off the road for a long time but i remember it being a nice upgrade to the internal microphone! The cable is super long too so its possible to place the mic anywhere in/on the car.

This is the only example i have uploaded, mic was between the exhausts.
