The missus' 11 year old Escort is on the verge of needing a clutch replacement. Mechanic quoted 'a few hundred' for it to be done. It's hardly worth it given the value of the car.

I get my company car in a couple of months time.....damn probabtion periods...so we will have about 200 quid a month to spend on a motor. I reckon thats about a 6k loan over a few years.

She really fancies an Audi A3 and I must admit I like the looks of em, but know it is just an overpriced Golf. Basic criteria for the car are that:

about 25 miles a day commute round trip so nice low mpg would be good
quite nippy
looks the part.

Any recommendations or do we just go for the A3 :)

I really wouldent worry about fuel economy with a 25 mile round trip, what it would save you over a year would be neglidgeable.

6k wouldget you a very average A3, you could get a lot more car for the money.

what do you want from the car with regard to space/speed/handling etc...

qite nippy really could mean any thing,I take it performance isnot a massive requirement?

Is a focus out of the question? or doesit have to be a "good" badge.

You can get a lot of car for around 6k (certain people may even pont you in the way of nicely specced high mileage 530i') but then i suppose they wouldent wan't a band wagon this time around! :D

Anyway I'll go get my flame suit on, any mention of the word ford around here seems to start world war 3.

I take it it is the focus/astra/A3/golf sized car you are looking at. Go a bit larger and you may be surprised at what you can get for the money.

Skoda octavia's are also greatfor the cash, even get an early VRS for that probably, although one of the diesels may suit you needs better. Vag build quality, Vag cars/engines, ford prices.

Even get a Skoda superb for that cash, loads of spec on the octavia's and the superbs, should get a nice PD130 engine and loads of spec in either. Although if I am suggesting a superb I have to mention the mondeo, no motors thread wouldbe complete without it! :D (runs away flame suit in hand)

For 6k any A3 you are looking at will be the same chassis and base interior as the Seat Leon. You will get a much better specified Leon for your money as well.

Focus would be my next choice.

For the record my vote is with either spending the few hundred on the escort or if it's really on the way out spend 1-2k on something with a good few years life left in it.

If you've got a company car on the way you simply don't need another 6k car. It's mad money to be spending on a car which is just transport and I'd never even consider it unless it was a car I was enthusiastic about.

I've got a company car on the way....t'other half has still got to get to work/go shopping etc etc.

She's a bit of a snob so a skoda is a no no. I will take a looksie at the leons.

6k isn't *lots* of cash over a couple of years as a loan and well within our budget. That's the joy of being a couple, I get to pay for half of something I will never use :D

Focus is another option, beemer is probably out just because of the costs of consumables like tyres etc.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Any more for any more?

Numpty tbh

To dismiss a car because of the badge on the bonnet is just plain daft.

The octavia is an excellent car.

Other suggestions are the abvious Focus, astra, golf, leon etc.

It's absolutely bottom of the range, BMW parts + servicing won't be cheap and it's simply not as good as its similarly priced rivals. You'd be better off with an MX5 in my opinion :).
