To cut a long story short there is an elderly couple down the road from me. They had a beautifully kept Alfa 156 2.4JTD on a 52 plate. In the past the guy has chatted to me about my Alfa when I have been washing it. They are a dear old couple.

Unfortunately he had a stroke early last year and was hoping to drive again but it hasn't happened. I have helped them out a few times taking him for hospital appointments and taking his car for an MOT in November so they could keep it on the road.

Today they knocked on my door and asked if I would like to keep their car as he has decided he wont derive again.

I felt a bit guilty as I am really broke and couldn't really offer them anything much in return. They were insistent they wanted me to keep it and not sell it for them like I suggested.

Even has 4 months tax on it, fully loaded with CD changer, climate control and spotless leather interior. Pulls like a train when you put your foot down and sounds lovely for a diesel.

So looks like it will become my commuter car, it is filthy dirty so I will clean it and picture it soon.

When i saw a free car i was expecting some rusty shed. Sounds like you are very lucky :)

The body is spotless apart from a tiny scuff and parking dings here and there.

It will probably need new front lower arms for next MOT which are very common and I can do them myself for about £100. Rear pads are quite low too but other than that I can't really fault it.

I usually by a cheap car every other year just to run into the ground. To be honest this will be perfect for work.

I am going to figure away to make it up to them.

Sound like nice folk and would sounds like they would probably be offended with money so something small (choccies/wine) plus maybe they could do with some help with bits & bobs after his stroke. Cut the grass or whatever.

Good guy Third Opinion :D that's really nice of them!!! and hey you might feel bad for not being able to give/offer much but it's doesn;t have to be like that. as you said you helped out with getting the car MOTd and running him for appointments. Things don't have to about money, just keep going as you are :) (and I'm sure if you won the lotto you'd make them a little offer ;) )

There are plenty of decent people left in the world, you and your neighbours included!

Perhaps if you're stuck for ways to show your gratitude you could offer to do any gardening or household / DIY jobs they might be putting off / unable to do? :)

exactly! simple things that we take for granted but harder for them, I'm sure they'd probably more like it if they were gardening and you just gave a hand with tricky stuff... old people love that gardening xD
