Got around £1000 to send on GPU power

Well yes, quad SLi GTX590 is effectively 4 GTX580 GPUs with slower clocks, but it'd still be faster than two GTX580 cards.

The thing is, you get massively diminishing returns with more than 2 GPUs. With quad SLi, rather than get 400% performance of a single GPU you're probably more in the 300% performance bracket, so it can be considered a bit of a waste.

And you'll find the noise bad with either dual GPU card - it's just that they're pretty evenly matched for performance but the HD6990 is a good part cheaper.

Oh, and I get excellent performance on a 1920x1200 panel with a single HD6950 - so something like a GTX580/HD6990 would be more than enough.
 
Two 580's will be plenty. I can max nearly everything at 1080p with two 460's.

Obviously it's a bit overkill :D but money doesn't seem to be an issue so go for it.

I'm not sure any dual card setup will qualify as quiet though, unless you fancy water-cooling them.

He probably has enough for a holiday as well. I reckon most of the people posting here would jump at the chance of twin 580's if they had the money to spend without worrying, so what's the problem?

The only problem is that "we" are not sure if GTX 580 SLI is a justified purchase for the OP's res and gaming use. There are many ways to cut a £1000, and if you consider that in approximately 12 months they might be clearing 580s in a similar fashion to the 480s at the moment, it is just another reason to be wary of such a high spend. Also the OP wants silence, and I am not sure the 580 SLI combo would give him this.

Having said that, money is not an issue and a 580 SLI combo will maintain its power for at least one further generation - so it is the OP's call.
 
No way would I blow 1k on video cards. A 480 at £200 would be plenty of power for a single 1080p display! If you have to have a 580 then just get the one. I think they are massively overpriced for a card that is only 20% better than a 480 though.
 
480 SOC With the better cooler? More or less same performance as a 580 with the overclock, and two of them is £400, just a bit more than a 580, getting 2 580's would be a waste IMO, Especially with the 480 SOC Being almost the same performance wise :) Plus then you've got some (a lot! :eek:) Left over ;) Also... I'm welcome to donations for saving you £400 ;) *Hint*Hint* hahaha :p
 
Two 2 Gb 6950s flashed to 6970s, or with that much money simply two of MSIs lightning 6970s.

Nothing more that will make much improvement.
 
I can apply plenty of AA and max settings in just about any game at 1920x1200 on my 480 anyway though. I feel my card is probably overkill for my monitor currently. And I can't see any more power being needed in the near future with 99% of pc games being console ports these days.

Try using SSAA instead of MSAA.

Multisampling AA is poop compared to just 4x of supersample.
 
I'm really not that picky when it comes to AA :) ordinary AA is perfectly good enough for me. And to be honest, more and more games don't even work with it as they are designed with consoles as the lead platform now.
 
Haha I'm no rich kid with endless amounts of cash lol. Just no kids yet and don't go out boozing everyweek so I like to treat myself with gadgets, I don't plan to upgrade for atleast a year and hopefully I will be able to spend more time on the pc. I am thinking of the 2x580 option. Just the choice between the twin frozr or the phantom??

Twin Frozr. The Phantom uses 3 slots and SLI will be a bitch to setup.
