Woke up to find my driver side window smashed in.

They got away with my bluetooth GPS, PDA, and my mp3 FM transmitter.

Will cost me 60bucks for the windscreen/glass excess, and prolly another 150 or so to replace the GPS. Already made a police report and have a crime number, whatever that is for...

Question is, should i attempt to claim the GPS etc under the contents insurance for my car or will the excess and increase in premium make it more expensive in the long run?

Presumably the bluetooth GPS would be at the back of the glove box. They're small so I could understand leaving one there.

Wouldn't leave the pda though. I take it you have (had?) some kind of car cradle for it?

No, the question is why did you leave it all in the car anyway?

GPS I can understand but PDA and mp3 transmitter was kinda asking for it, especially if left in view.

A harsh lesson learnt. :(

His PDA I assume IS his GPS, the "bluetooth GPS" he mentions will literally just be the sattelite reciever.

I personally don't leave any of the above in the car.

They were all left in the glove box. The pda was really only used as a GPS, the GPS box was just a small matchbox connnected by bluetooth to the pda.
The fm transmitter was also in the glovebox.

All in, they were small items which wernt in plain sight, and how on earth did they know it was there i dont know. Sigh, just placed an order for another GPS, the acer e305, cheapest gps system around i could find.

What annoys me is the fact that this "incident" will cost me about a weeks wage, and that i already support the scroate through my taxes indirectly.

Do you have a fixed placed cradle for the PDA?

If so, they probably just broke in on the offchance you left everything in the car out of view... seems they were unfortunately correct :(

Ouch, my car got done in Tesco car park and I had a similar abount stolen. PDA/Sat Nav (Medion version of the Mitac Mio 168), its cradle and my gf's mp3 player. 99% sure it was the cradle on view which made them try their luck, unfortunately for me it was in the glovebox which is very rare for me as I hadn't been home from work yet.

I ended up just buying a Navman F20 for £99 as I never really used the PDA stuff anymore.

As for the window get a quote first. My excess was £60 the window inc. fitting was £58. Not much of a saving but less hassel to just bung the cost on my credit card there and then.

thanks for the recommendation, after looking about, i think the F20 is actually better than the Acer e305, have ammended my order accordingly.

On the bright side, at least i am rid of the pda/gps and will have a new toy tomm...

Sucker marks on window, cradle/holder in view etc. Good thieves know the signs, and it is madness to leave that stuff in your car overnight if it's not securely locked in a garage etc.

did you leave the cradle on view ?

apparently its quite common know for people to brake in cars with GPS / PDA / Phone Cradles just to check the gloveboxes. People have left the craldes in, taken their stuff with them, but had their window shashed for their trouble

even then, some people report they've had their windows smashed and their glovebox checked for only having ring marks on the windows, left by their cradles !

I have a cradle fitted to the dash, not possible to remove it. So when I leave the car, I open the glove box and show that it just contains a windscreen scraper and de-icer. :)
