Got flashed by speeding camera

Without realising, entered a 40mph from a 50mph zone and got flashed by a camera (doing 50mph as expected). Excuses are, it was dark, road was clear, not enough warning about 40mph zone, etc etc. Either way, I got caught speeding.

I'm just worried about what will happen now as I've never been caught speeding before. What should I expect? £60 and 3 points? Does it get sent to your home? How long?

Please advise. :(

Is imagine you are below the threshold where it's a hefty fine and 6+ points, so yes 3 points and a small fine (thought it had gone up from £60 though?). You should get a NIP in the post shortly.

Should find that your insurance doesn't go up much.

You might be offered a speed awareness course depending on the location and actual speed.

Assuming I don't get anymore, where can having 3 points on your license make a difference? Insurance is one, anything else?

Is it true most cameras don't have film in them? Anyone got flashed but never received a fine?

Only car insurance. I've got 3 points on mine and it seems to have bumped my premiums by about £30 a year. It's not anything you'd have to disclose to an employer unless you're a driver!

If you do get the points it's worth letting your insurer know straight away but it won't affect anything till your next renewal.

Go to Pepipoo.com if you want any specific advice, make sure the NIP comes through within 14 days - any later and you can fight it...

What speed would you estimate the camera was travelling at? also unless you overtook the camera it wouldnt pick you up as speeding because speed is relative

That's happened to me twice :) Remember if the NIP doesn't come through the door within two weeks it is timed out and you're in the clear.

As above if you're offered the sped awareness course, take it!

Careful, that's not true - it would show up on my employers checks for example and I don't drive for a living. Not that it would cause any issue either getting or staying in the job but as I found out with certain levels of security checks you need to disclose driving offences too.

Not true. They have to issue/serve it within 14 days. If you don't receive it because of Royal Mail, that's not their problem.

If I get the option to do an awareness course, would it be worth doing?

Yes, very. £90 instead of £60 but you get no points.

However some insurance companies will want it declared and will still adjust your premiums even if the police tell you your insurance won't go up. Do your research about the company you're with.

Actually, it is their problem. Service is deemed within a statutory period. See Pepipoo for more details and check facts before attempting to contradict someone.
Only trying to help.

I just checked my insurance because I might have been caught by a scammera van.
directline quotes were £410 -> £570, so quite a big difference!

Only a small number of cameras have film in them at any one time in most areas. If you've not received anything in the post after a couple of weeks, then you'll be OK. If you do get a NIP, then it'll be an offer of a fixed penalty or course (or the option to challenge in court). Be aware that some insurance companies are now asking for declarations of courses as well as normal penalties, so it could still affect your premium if you are offered one of these.
