Got interview offer. Dosh too low. What would you do?

Just goto the interview...I made the mistake of not chasing up a job a few years ago because I thought the 'money was too low' now i'm on the same amount of money as I was when I was 18.

It's the way you sold it to be honest. Taking time off to travel (whilst a jolly) looks infinitely better than "catching up with friends" or reading. I do those things outside working hours. Maybe I'm being overly harsh, but I'm sure there is a more conservative way to describe your time off.
A jolly is exactly what it is/was! I just don't see why deciding to do something other than work for a while is a problem! I could have said I went travelling, but I didn't - that would be a lie. If someone has an otherwise good work history, I don't see the odd few months off between positions as a problem.

True, as long as they don't form the conclusion 'He's been job searching like a mad monkey for 4 months and no-one wants him' as that can only poison their impression of you ..

I guess if someone has a suspicious work history it might be an impression one forms, but if they present well, have a strong body of knowledge and significant experience, then it's not something I would be concerned about at all.

I think the quality of the candidate determines whether you will find a problem with a break between jobs or not. If it's a poor quality applicant, you might notice the break and link it to being a bad employee. If it's an obviously high quality candidate, I don't think it will enter your mind.

Never worked at OcUK, just a regular member like yourself :)

I work elsewhere but if Gibbo or Spie want to find a way of dropping me on the books I wouldnt say no :P

Andy

So you dont work for OCUK but your a moderator but only have 190 posts.

Fishy.

I have a question thats related to this.

I graduate next year and will have to find work, my last job i was 16, im now 24. So theres an 8 year gap where i have never worked. Will the employer question this and judge me on it ? Do i tell them the truth, that i have lived within my means and made money by myself without working for anyone ? Do i have to tell the employer how (if i tell people how i make money, they will do it and i will make less) or can i just tell them its none of their business ?

Im hoping an interest takes off to the point where i never have to work for someone. I am not lazy, i just dont see the point of working to get someone else rich, would rather end up working for SIS or the Police or something!

No as you have been in education.

Really i thought you worked there (mostly from the post count +don thing mind)

Jeez it's sickening to see people attacking in this thread.

A couple of people took a tiny joke too far, someone comes on here with a previous agenda and shazam the poor lad is getting a beat down.

Brew a cup of tea, settle down and answer the bloody question.

Anyway, enough time has passed; what have you decided to do?

Go for the interview (Friday) and not mention the dosh unless specifically asked. I have an amazing job interview the following Wednesday so even if they offer me on Friday - stall until after then. If it's 'naff job' or nothing, I'll take naff job but theh really persuade myself to keep looking around with much gusto!

Exactly - you only have to work there until something better comes along.

So the more you earn, the more retarded it is to question a percentage based income pay drop? Riiigggght.

(Hey guess what dude, doctors earn 6 figures and they have huge great expensive annual meetings to discuss each year's rise and whether it's acceptable or action is needed (and they moan on about single percentage points). So following super-James logic that must make doctors ultra-retards with their simple salary advice meetings. Lol?). I will never understand how someone has got old and wise enough to use the internet, but not old and wise enough to realise that at all levels people take advice about salary ..

I will never underestimate the daftness of t'net. It's legendary, and kinda fun. Especially from the young 'uns!

Congratulations at writing an utterly pointless fail of a post. Really, a lot of the stuff you've come out with on the forum has been utter rubbish (ant farm in the office anyone) so why on earth should I/we believe a word you say?

I'm fully aware of doctors salaries actually as I use to work with them, yet your not a doctor and instead think about not taking a job because you can live off your "savings" yet having a job, even at a lower wage would stop you draining your savings account further and fill the gap in your CV, attracting more employment. Oh sorry thats common sense isn't it....

Moving on

' yet your not a doctor '

it's

you're

And I never claimed to be one lol. Your older than me yet you can't even construct an actual mature reply? Good work to be honest, you just expose your true side which is probably some annoying attention seeking teenager.

Remember you said:

'asking for simply salary advice when your at that payscale anyway is utterly retarded in my opinion.'

I answered

'But doctors ask for simple pay advice and they're on a wack-load'

You answered

'But you are not a doctor, and, er, I know some doctors. Therefore it is common sense you should take any old job whatever it pays so as not to dip into your savings.' !!

Yea good one. Have you even thought that taking the job will legally oblige me to 4 week notice period - which is longer than any IT contract will remain open for me in the future, therefore probably (not definately) dooming me to 'permie' work? Or that taking a job as a, let's say, Macdonalds worker .. may actually be more of a downer than seeing my savings wander away at 'macdonalds salary' per year?

No? Ho-hum ...

Besides I've decided what I'm doing .. read earlier. /thread

Atleast quote me correctly instead of just trying to make it look different. I said "instead think about not taking a job because you can live off your "savings" yet having a job, even at a lower wage would stop you draining your savings account further and fill the gap in your CV, attracting more employment."

Difficult to understand I'm guessing...
