Ooooo, a HD DVD player, were guna be having a lot of these threads sooner or later arnt we? Looks very nice. Congrats.

Looks cool, nice one.

OK, questions for you:
- How much?
- How well does it interface with your TV?
- How well does is play normal DVDs when compared to standard DVD player?

Precisely why is it so bulky and why the need for the exhaust fan at the back. HD-DVD isn't that different from DVD at all, just a few changes in components and different spec laser.

Heck Microsoft are able to put a HD-DVD player into a tiny plastic case, and Toshiba mean to say they can't?

The toshiba hd-xa1 is £600 inc power transformer.

The player is connected to a 4 in 1 vivanco hdmi switch box which is connected to my tvs hdcp dvi input i have had no issues so far.

The toshiba hd-xa1 will only play region 1/0 dvds and will also upscale them to 720p/1080i over hdmi and is said to better most top rated upscaling dvd players and i can vouch for that.

I plan on buying a new 37"1080i/p lcd tv in the next few months.

The Toshiba doesn't just contain the drive, it also contains the equipment necessary to process the data from the disc into audio and video, iirc it's similar to a PC inside - hence the fan. The reason the 360 drive is smaller is that the XBOX will do the processing etc after recieving the data from the drive. :)

Because these Toshiba players are actually Linux boxes! Hence they take around 40 seconds to boot up (unless i'm mistaken). You effectively have a mini-pc with a HD-DVD drive in it.

:)

Watch this guy pull one apart its just a pc inside and pcs need fans to keep them cool.

The microsoft hd dvd player is just a drive on its own not a complete standalone hd dvd player the rest of the hardware is in the 360 so once you put them together it aint that much smaller.

Bonus!! :D
Thank's for the reply.

I do like the idea of a dedicated HD DVD player but I can't justify that cost at the moment, fair play to the OP though, must be chuffed to bits with it.

Around November I think for HD DVD to be released over here.

I'm afraid that green glowing power button of the Tosh wouldn't sit well with the rest of my bloo glowing button gadgets. So it's out for me :p

Chronicles of Riddick is supposed to be a top HD DVD disc for picture & sound quality.

I'll get hold of a 1080P HD DVD player once I get hold of a 1080P projector.

Next year is looking to be a very good year for home cinema.

whats its performance like ?

i was planning on getting a 360 once the price drops after the PS3 launch have come into effect

i was also planning on spending £60 on toshiba SD360 to upscale DVDs

is the upscaling as good as a dedicated solution ?

How are you getting on with the player? Seen a few offers around, for the HD-XA1 for £599.99 plus 5 (maybe 7) HD-DVDs. Although i'll probably go for the the cheaper HD-A1.

Have you had any problems at all?

Rumours have it, the players are Region 1 only for DVDs, but multi-region for HD-DVDs, as the European HD-DVDs will be the same NTSC format (720p or 1080i).

Yes i also seen that deal typical when i just bought mine

problems no cant say ive had any yet every disc has played flawlessly its cool how you can enter the disc menu while the films still running and the player is great as a cd player best ive heard.

Yes i can confirm they do not play pal region 0/2 dvds message just says this disc is pal cannot play hopefully all european disc will be the same format but if not its easy to get hold of american discs from the likes of movietyme.
