Well then making a cup of tea, i thought the norm was

cup>teabag>water>wait a couple of min to brew> add milk

a friend just made me a cuppa with

cup> milk>tea bag>water

mad it taste horrible IMO

Any one else doing it adding milk 1st? :p

Supposedly the best way is to make the tea in a seperate pot, then put milk in the mug/cup, then add the tea. Something to do with the flavour of the milk changing depending on the order of if you add hot>cold or cold>hot, I think.

But making in a mug, IMO the milk goes in last after the tea had brewed for a minute or two.

My Mum adds milk into her brew before the water. It just makes it taste weak and horrible I think.

Teabag>water>brew>sugar(optional)>milk

This. A pot is handy but you can get a good drink just using a mug.

I can remember MIF (milk in first) being used to be a term of abuse, as in being too stupid to make a cup of tea, or in public school circles, being of a lower order :)

Every time we get this thread, the agreed outcome is..

The heat from the hot water releases the flavour from the tea bag; therefore hot water first is the best (and sugar with the tea bag if you see fit, so the sugar dissolves into the water)

Milk goes in before hot water with coffee

No it doesn't.

When making a cup of tea by brewing it in the mug, I also heat the mug up first with hot water. Brews better, stays hot for longer, tastes better.

And of course milk goes in last unless you've made a pot.

Milk last, always*

*= unless making coffee

Milk goes in first when making a pot of tea.

I've done many a test into this method and both methods above are not great for these reasons:

1) You need to brew the tea at almost boiling water, therefore adding milk in first cools the water too much to brew the tea to a satisfactory standard - so that's out

2) If you add milk to almost boiling water, then you effectively "scald" the milk. A chemist has done tests into this, and the high temperature changes the chemical structure of the milk, making it taste more bitter - so that's not ideal.

The best solution, is to brew the tea in one mug, so you get a good brew and then add this brew to milk already in another mug, so the milk doesn't scald (as the more milk in there, the cooler the temp will be when adding tea to it).

However, if you can't be bothered with this, it's far better to brew the tea first and add the milk than have a poor brew to begin with :)
