Got my index but think my CPU might need upgrading

Got my index and controllers yesterday which is very impressive and a big upgrade from the Vive or the o+, but my system seems to struggle in some games at 120hz, and using fspvr it is the CPU that is maxing out, already set the SS to 100% and turned off motion smoothing.
I'm currently running i7 6700k, 24gb ram and a 1080ti

Are there any tips to get it running better without losing image quality?
Would a CPU overclock help or is it time to upgrade?

What game are you experiencing problems with?

An overclock is definitely the first easy thing to try. I have 7700k so on par with your processor although I generally only run 120Hz in simple games like beat saber.
Process lasso can help secure resources to a specific programme.
Are you running at max power settings?
Also a third party programme like razer cortex can be used to free up resources.

Beatsaber was fine at 120hz, I didn't do many as i was mainly setting up last night but didn't like Pavlov or the lab at 120hz and was maxing out the cpu

Mine was order the 10th April, for the headset and controllers, the headset only orders have the quickest lead time and then the full kits but it looks they they are starting to catch up on the backlog now

Played everything at 90hz tonight and it has no issies, guess I'll just have to save the 120hz for beatsaber untill I upgrade

Off subject, I've had mine on order for over a month, and it still says over 8 weeks, how long did it take before you got any info ?

It depends which bundle you ordered as for how long you can expect. I ordered the full kit in the middle of May and currently sitting at 2 weeks so looking at 3-3.5 month wait currently. There's a reddit spreadsheet if you want more details, it linked in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/ffr50u/availabilityorder_megathread_march_9th/

Sorry to thread hijack.. but im in the middle of building a HTPC which can run VR, i bagged an i5 6500 cheap, but now im wondering if ill need something with a bit more oomph... it'll be running an original RIFT so less demanding than an index..

do you think it'll be ok for most applications?

What GPU do you have?

Probably a 5700xt

How often do you rebuild your HTPC? New cards from both companies are coming out soon and both going to be using Dx12 Ultimate. Dx21 Ultimate will bring some great benefits to VR gaming.

AMD's 5700XT will not have support for DX12 Ultimate. If you are upgrading your HTPC every year, then this isn't a problem, but, if you only upgrade every few years then I would suggest you get a Turing card(Current Nvidia cards 2060 super and up) or wait until the next gen is released.

I currently have a 5700xt on my main rig. im literally just building a HTPC/VR system. Once the new cards land, i was planning on grabbing one and using the 5700xt in the VR rig. im just not 100% on the i5

I'm looking to get a new build to support the Index. I've got one but my 1080ti and ancient build runs like a room heater.

I will probably get a 3080ti, bearing in mind the OP was re a CPU, what is worth looking at in the near future?

If you have a 5700XT then that's fine. I just wouldn't go buying a GPU now. I would say your I5 is fine for the Oculus Rift.

There is no information yet from either company about the next generation of cards. Just lots and lots of idle speculation.

Nvidia is having some sort of event on the 1st of September. Hopefully they will release details of their upcoming cards at the event.
