Go ahead and waste money on a sub amp if you wish. As it is with a av amp, and 5 speakers and a passive sub you'll just get tinny sound.
Yes any good speaker will be better than Sony DAV speakers, although to use DAV without a sub will sound horrid. Possibly the sub driver is damaged, you need to open it up and inspect the driver. If your budget is £100 that's not enough, I'd put another £100 into a av amp.
I must admit that I have just scanned a fair bit of this thread, but 1 thing really stands out:
Satellite speak frequency - 180 - 20,000 Hz
You are leaving a lot of Hz range for a sub to cover and the results may not be pretty. Ideally you don't want a sub to be covering anything over 80-100Hz tops in my own experience but I am sure there will be other opinions on this. I can't remember the last sub I came across that was adjustable any higher than 150Hz and even then they sounded far from happy at the higher end of their capabilities. Add to that a 30Hz gap at least in the audible range between where the sub stops and the sats begin.
I have to say it, but I believe that the other guys are right in their opinions that you would actually be better off without those satellite speakers.
How can i be better off? Why do people keep saying this. I can't stress enough that the alternative is either use these speakers, or leave the system sitting there till i get more money for new speakers. How is it better to not use it at all than to use them until i can get new ones?
Because you'll probably have to waste money at this stage buying suitable subwoofer and/or subwoofer amplifier which may need upgrading when you decide to buy more speakers.
Uneven pricing, that subwoofer is probably more expensive than the Sonys, and when you upgrade the Sonys you'd probably want to upgrade the sub also.
tbh I wouldn't even give a £150 subwoofer the time of day.
Do you not have any opinion on my suggestion?![]()
Well I was only offering an alternative solution which he might not have considered... No need to be quite so blunt about it.No because it isn't in line with what he wants to do, and you're not being open minded enough or posting relevant information.

Edit: IMO its the OP who's not being open minded, and is only paying attention to posters who agree with him. Why bother posting for advice on a forum if you don't want alternative / differing opinions and solutions?
