Current spec:
E6850
Asus p5q pro
4gb ram
BFG 280GTX OCX
128gb SSD
2x 500gb harddrive
windows 7 premium 64bit
24" Hyundai Monitor
dvd drive
Akasa Eclipse 62 case
Akasa Fan Controller
Sound Blaster Audigy Card
Senhesier HeadPhones
Zalman PSU 1000W
G15 Keyboard
Razor Mouse

My rig is basically for gaming and web browsing and it does that perfectly, but for some reason i want to upgrade some parts. This is all i can think of that i might want:
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5970
Pioneer BDR-S03XLB 8x BD-ReWriter / 16x DVD±RW Drive

If it were me I'd wait a bit longer and save up your pennies over the 5970 for a i5 or i7 setup. I may be wrong but I would have thought your E6850 would bottleneck the system with a 5970 and a 280 GTX should be more than enough for HD viewing if you really want a Blu Ray drive.

From looking at your system though it doesn't look like your hard up (128gb SSD drive ) so if you want to buy them you can but i think a processor upgrade for that system is justifiable as well

upgrading JUST your graphics card is the wrong idea , your system is nicely balanced right now and upgrading to a 58xx let alone 5970 would bottleneck the CPU. You are better off saving to 650 and getting a decent i5 setup or spending less and getting the i5 setup now without a graphics card and then upgrading to a 59xx or 58xx at a later date.

I have a similar setup..

q6600
gtx 260
4gb

I'm waiting for a game to come up that is..

a) good
b) low fps on this setup

I dont really want a whole new setup, ive got it in my head that i want to do that on my bday and that aint till oct 3rd 2010. I think i wont bother with a new graphics card until i see what nvidia bring out which i think is in march/april time.

So that leaves me with maybe a cpu upgrade, i currently have a e6850 which is a 3ghz cpu so no real slouch. Ive narrowed it down to two cpus that i could get:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-231-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

Questions though:
1) will they work in my motherboard a asus p5q pro?

2) dual core or quad core whats better for games

3) Is it worth it, would it make a possible 5970 less bottlenecked

1) yes

2) Quadcore , even when games use 2 cores if u OC ur quad you will get as good if not better fps

3) its not worth it , the 5970 wont be that bottlenecked if u OC the Q9650 a lot but it really isnt worth it since you would be spending like 700 quid on the card + processor with no future proofing on the system apart from keeping the card

The amount you would be spending on a 5970 and the upgraded processor is enough to get a decent i5 system and it really is a waste of money doing what you're thinking of.

Thanks for the advice:)
Ill just stick with a cpu upgrade then:)
As long as i can play the following games at max settings@1920x1200 i dont mind:
The Old Republic
AVP (need dx11 to play at max)
Assassin's Creed 2
Diablo 3
Just Cause 2
Mass Effect 2

One other thing to consider if you're looking at a 5970 is the size of your case, as they are mahoosive.

i would suggest overclocking the crap out of ur 6850 and keeping that ( dont know how well they clock ) but if not it seems like ur itching to spend some cash so upgrade to the quad and hf

Bit hard for us to make a comment on those since they are all un-released titles. They will all be DX10 compliant if not DX11.

Similarly if you want to waste some money I would like a new 24" monitor, CPU, GPU etc etc :)

I think i might order the cpu in the next couple weeks as a xmas present to myself. Im sitting here thinking why dont i just order it now, i must resist.
