Otherwise you will get stuck with a message saying that your OS is pirate, with instructions on how to buy a legit one. So, unless you want this lame ass notification coming up every time you power up your pc, don't use the automatic update option. Or buy a copy of windows.

And this is not the windows forum...must be the hour, I really need to sleep.

:D :D

I got up this morning at 4am, ironed my shirt, polished my shoes, made my packed lunch and drove to work only to realise that it's my day off today  :D

I've done that,
Colin: "Hey your not into day"
Me: "Arn't I?"
*Colin Shakes head*
Me:"********"
*Re-walks the hour walk*.

This has been happening for at least six months on certain pirated copies.
I have a legal copy and I don't have Windows Updates on.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The message only comes up after you've done a windows update, there is a way to stop it checking if your windows is legal. I have a legal copy of windows and due to forum rules won't mention how to get around it.

You can also uninstall the software that displays the messages, so I dont think it is too much to worry about.

Anyways if you dont have a legit version of Windows, then it telling you that it is not legit should be the last of your worries, the fact your cant get the latest security updates from the web should worry you more.

Win2K is deffinitely the win, however we are now slowly being forceed to upgrade, with the release of IE7 we will no longer have browser support :(

This just isn't true. There's that many non legit copies about that any protection is cracked very quickly. I don't understand microsofts reasoning on this as piracy is a major part of why msdos/windows has been so sucessful. They've also said in the past that it's better for overall windows security if the dodgy copies are up to date.

What with all the security holes and IE problems this is really very silly. Even I ran WU last week

But they keep on trying to make you download genuine! Bah this is lame, if only the programs I use where to run on mac os or linux I wouldn't be making this thread.

Wrong, they've only stopped the manual updates from the Windows Update website - automatic updates still work if your version is legal or not

Absolutely, the only reason I continue to use Windows is for specialist engineering software and CAD, otherwise I would be using Linux for everything. (I know CAD is available on Linux but it isn't quite there yet).

Gaming is a diferent matter, but my next purchase is going to be a console of some kind so that doesn't matter either. :)

Firefox is fine for the home user, but at work we use policies to control the IE behaviour which is just not possible with FF (afaik), so what do we do at work for security?

plus IE is so heavily integrated with windows that if an exploit is available for for IE then your whole windows version is at risk.

As for the windows updates working on pirate versions of windows XP I cant see it myself. The genuine advantage tool put an end to all that.
