Right guys i need to build myself a new desk in order to get a desk that will suit my needs a little better. Im looking to make it of just plain simple MDF but i cant for the life on me find any online e-tailers. Im looking for approx 4m in length, 50-60cm in width and the thickest depth possible. Any help appreciated!

Go to somewhere like B&Q or Wickes or a builders merchant

DO NOT GO TO B&Q. go to a merchant such as Wickes, Jewson etc. Get your measurements for each bit that you need and they will cut it all for you and then all you have to do is put it together. Everywhere and anywhere is cheaper than B&Q...

B&Q is near enough the same price or a little cheaper than wickes.
B&Q cut wood for you but i don't think jewson or wickes do. not around here anyway.

First of all do a design. find sizes you want and work out how you want it finished.

Then go to a local merchant and they will cut it for you on there machinery. Most will do it for free or very cheap. Saves so much hassle.

Depending on the finish you want, I would probably stay away from MDF.

18mm mdf about £13 for a sheet of 8' x 4'
oak veneered about £35
walnut veneered about £60

just priced up for units for a dressing room im doing, your kinda stuck with painted finish for plain mdf

if you just want a cheap functional desk then you could try using kitchen worktop. that comes in the size you are looking for and in lots of different finishes.

All of them will cut your wood for you near me. I maybe lucky with my dad having been in the trade. But usually they are all very friendly and both cheaper than B&Q. It may just be the area I live in though.

Us lazy people, thats who :P

nah just trying to get the ideas of prices first just a thought on this lonely evening :)

You won't find anything online because it would be nearly impossible to put some MDF in a box and put it in the post! Even if you could (for tiny orders) the postage cost would be much more than the value most of the time.

That's what i'm doing when I sort my room out, Ikea do a variety of sizes and colours pretty cheaply - the downside is i'm going to have to buy a new jig for the router if I do use Ikea's stuff (it's 606mm rather than the 600mm that is more normal).

As for where to buy mdf, i don't think there is a great deal of difference between the main retailers, certainly not if you've got to travel any distance to get it (we're lucky that we've got 2x builders merchants, homebase*, wickes and B&Q within 15 minutes of us), although for natural wood I would definately go to a merchant rather than B&Q, Wickes etc as their wood tends to be from bannana trees in my experience ;)

*I tend to avoid homebase for DIY stuff as they tend to be fairly expensive and limited range/stock (I remember when they actually had more than one small corner of the store, on one floor for wood/sheet materials)

Go to Ikea they tend to have some cheap but good desks etc.Failing that grab the yellow pages and find a local wood merchant, every town has one.
