Gout!

I'm on the tail end of an attack at the moment. Get them every few months or so. In my case it's entirely down to too much booze. I've cut down, though, so the attacks are less intense.

Before I went to see the doctor, I'd had about 3 serious attacks and the pain is just incredible. I still went about daily life etc. but I was in constant agony and barely able to walk.

Luckily when I get an attack, I don't actually get any inflammation or tender tissue which actually had the doctor tell me it must just be a sprain until I demanded a blood test. I guess if you aren't sitting in the GP's office screaming your head off in visible agony then they assume you aren't in that much pain. She didn't believe me when I was telling her how much it hurt (as someone else mentioned, even the weight of a small duvet can be immensely painful). When the bloodwork results came back, her attitude changed quite quickly though.

What did you say? "HAHA i told you i'm in extreme pain!!!" Bit of a hollow victory tbh :p

I have had it since about 2003. Normally a couple of attacks a year lasting a day or two. Very painful but easily handled with anti inflammatory drugs. However, a couple of months a go I had a really bad one which made it impossible for me to leave the couch for two weeks and was like nothing I have ever had before. Eventually subsided after a steroid injection to the knee but then still for weeks I have had muscular pain in both legs due to.muscle wastage. I have now been put on allupurinol to control the uric acid levels. My advice, speak to your go about allupurinol as you really don't want a bad attack like this.
Also, while diet may have some contributory factors, the disease is mainly hereditary. It is perfectly.acceptable to punch any one who says "rich mans disease" or "too much good living" to you when you are suffering :)

Just make sure your GP prescribes you allopurinol instead of cochicine as the later is seriously bad for you! Also you might have to change your diet to reduce your intake of purine rich foods like beef.

Is gout incurable ?

It's not really a disease. Think of it like when you do too much exercise with not enough breathing, your muscles ache because of a build up of lactic acid. Lactic acid is always there, but if it builds up it causes problems. Same is true with gout. The acid is always there, but if it builds up it causes problems. The cause of gout is more important.

I get it on and off. I have tried cutting down different things (not that I was excessive in the first place) and it hasnt really worked. Hasnt been as painful as the first time I got it. I thought I had broken my toe, couldnt put any pressure on it at all.

Guy at work gets it quite badly. usually after a few beers - so he always drinks lightly.

It's like agony if even someting like a sheet is on your foot.

Indeed. My new doctor gave me colchicine for the last attack. I was also concerned when I read up on it. And it gives you bad guts.

Going to Docs this am to get pain relief and blood test so for those interested, I'll update how long it takes for pain to go after drugs ....

I've made it to 60 without getting it before so I suppose I've done ok but could do without it as it means that I can't work and only just had 3 weeks off (2 holiday and 1 clutch on van), so I won't be popular :D

I found the pain went by the afternoon once I started taking them, doctor gave me a large prescription as well so if I ever got another attack again i always had some there.

Can't remember what I was prescribed though.. Good luck and your be back on your feet in no time ;)

I suffer from Sudo-Gout. I have only ever had two 'attacks', the first I thought was a football injury, but the second was utter utter agaony. I was chomping on codeine like they were sweets, and they made no difference. I remember sitting on the sofa with my leg raised and just crying with the pain...it was agony.

Touch wood, it hasn't happened again :)

I've only ever had it once, and I pray that I never get it again. I've had some injuries in my time, I've been stabbed, but nothing has ever hurt like gout. Like other people said, I remember just laying there trying as hard as I can not to move an inch for fear of the shooting stabbing pains... I hope you recover soon mate.
