..But not for the Administrator user.

Hi,
I'm trying to remove the log off option from the start menu for any user that's not Administrator (or an administrator, but we only have the "Administrator" user set up as one).
Anyway, I've found "Remove Log Off on Start Menu in the
Local Computer Policy/User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar.

This seems to affect all users, and I'm sure there's a way for [The logoff option] to be removed from the start menu, but not for admin.

Anyone have any ideas how?

I've also tried System Policy Editor remotely onto the target pc with the user I'm interested in logged on at the time. Found an option under "Windows NT System" - "Disable Logoff" and checked that, saved it, but doesn't seem to have made any difference whatsoever.

So I'm stuck.
I COULD just remove it from all users and logoff with Start > Run > logoff - but I'd rather keep it a little "cleaner than that" approach.

Cheers.

I don't think this is possible in XP as it does not support multiple computer policies if the computer is just a standalone workstation. Or are you using Vista?

I'm no genius with GPO but can't you just set the GPO to effect a certain OU of users?

Also if you want to enable the option for certain users, you could for example put the policy on all users, then put another policy on just a certain group to re-enable the option after. My understanding is that GPO's run in a certain order and it's this which makes the difference.

Sorry should have mentioned. It's XP.
Does what you say (optitech-uk) render Eulogy's suggestion ... not good?

I may give it a go anyway, unless there's really no point. And it's not running on a domain.

ive done something similar recently on a laptop at work, but it was only for a specific user. i cant remember exactly what I did off hand without checking but im fairly sure i either altered something in gpedit or i modified the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Not sure it'll be any help as you want it disabled for all users bar admin though?

There is a way to do this but it is a bit of a hash. Basically it involves setting the policy as Administrator, then going into the system32 folder (I think, may be a level up) and find the GroupPolicy folder (it's hidden by default). and removing your account any access to it. Obviously for you to make a chance, you will need to take ownership of the folder again.
