Anyone ever used a GPS logger or such?

I've been looking around at the vast number available.

Requirements:

LONG battery life. As long as possible
Able to hold 1000+ waypoints
Ideally with speed and altitude measurements as well.

Probably not what you're after but Garmins are excellent, can store quite a lot of information, and you can upload the stuff to a website that accepts unlimited routes?

A Garmin eTrex can do that, good battery life and it has an really simple interface. The only downside is the serial cable which costs about £20 and is required to get the data out. I made my own cable with an old credit card, a cable from an old serial mouse and some hot glue, works fine.

Most devices should log to GPX format or at least a format that can be converted to GPX. You can then load the GPX into something like Google Earth or to OpenStreetMap. Typically speed is calculated after the data is collected by comparing the timestamps between two adjacent points.

Standard Garmin satnavs will do this out the box. My nuvi 255WT keeps a blueline log on everywhere you travel with the unit which can then be imported in Garmin's mapping software where you can view the entirety of your travels as waypoints/markers and overlaid nicely on a map.

It saves speed for each marker, elevation, time etc.

I've always fancied putting a tracker in my car for 6 months to see the tree that would sprout up around london/kent/sussex :D

Guess i'll have to upgrade my satnav to get something like that huh?

Guess so but if your Garmin is old then check for firmware updates, mine is like 3 years old now so the features I mention came with an update a while back.
