my dad is looking at getting a GPS as there is soon to be a lot of driving around.

Am i right in thinking that the TomTom one is a decent GPS?

Hes looking for something good but cheap, tomtom one is around £180 now?

I'm in a similar position and from the research I've done the Navman F20 seems to be ideal bang for buck. They're dead easy to use and tend to come in at about £150-160 :)

I'd personally stretch to the Tomtom ONE v2. It'd be worth the extra over the Navman. If you can stretch further then get a Tomtom 510.

I use tomtom 5 on my PDA, its identical to the TomTom 1 and its about as close to perfect as you can get, great instructions, sensible directions and good maps. I use mine daily to get to sites around Gloucestershire and its never put a foot wrong in 2 years.

How do they update? Do they do it automatically or do you have to download new software weekly? (im guessing new roads etc are built)

No, they expect you to buy an update every 2 years... if they still support the hardware. Basically the maps cost most of the price of a new satnav system.
