I'm in a similar position and from the research I've done the Navman F20 seems to be ideal bang for buck. They're dead easy to use and tend to come in at about £150-160
I use tomtom 5 on my PDA, its identical to the TomTom 1 and its about as close to perfect as you can get, great instructions, sensible directions and good maps. I use mine daily to get to sites around Gloucestershire and its never put a foot wrong in 2 years.
