GPU 4 BF3

Hey Qlimax, what graphics card are you running at the moment?

GTS250 1 GB (palit version)

other specs:
Q6600
4 GB ram 800Mhz
600w PSU (arctic) modular
JW-ip35-PRO

also i will need to know what power cables any new cards i get will need (2x6 pin is good, i dont want one that uses a 8pin+6pin)
and is there a card that carries HDMI audio across the card instead of using the pin audio lead?

I would imagine a 5850 + level of performance is going to be needed to run this reasonably well with a good amount of details at 1680 + resolution.

I'm still on xp... I need win 7 so no funds for a new gpu.... I'm hoping my power colour pcs+ 4890 overclocked version will suffice....

Thoughts?

I am still using 5850 in crossfire and it is all good. It will soon be two generations old but it still beats a single 6970.

I have a mate who has gone the 6870 crossfire route for BF3 so i will borrowing his 5770 (for crossfire) for the time being when i upgrade to those cards, even though i don't struggle to run games fine now with my lonely 5770 at 1080 res (hell i even did a 10min benchmark when playing BC2 one night settings all on medium 4AA/16AF,Min 47, Max 94, Avg 62)

Oh yea I agree. I'm hoping to upgrade from my 5770 to a 6950 for the new releases. Could wait for the 7 series, but I'm too impatient! I wantz it nowz!

Wouldnt a GTX 570 be better than a 6950?

I'm coming from a 5770 too for BF3. Not an nvidia or ATI 'fanboy' so just whichever is best

so 5850 will be good for BF3? i get confused with AMD/ATI as anything 'after' the 5850 seems to be a backstep with the main difference being less 'cores'...
i also know that 5850's are the most popular cards for bincoin so are very hard to get right now :(

I wouldn't get a 5850 if you don't have one already. if you want similar performance, get the 6870.

Depending on resolution and CPU speed, the 6870/5850 should cope pretty well with BF3 going by the alpha. We will know a lot more on final performance once the beta comes out this month. Remember, BFBC2 was very CPU dependent, it loved multiple cores, so expect BF3 to be the same. A quad core with 3.4GHz+ would be recommended imo.

BF3 isn't a console port though. I don't think it'll be as dependent on the CPU. But then again, what do I know? :p

Doesn't have to be a console port to make use of more than 2 cores. It will obviously perform a lot better on 4. Problem I've seen recently is that those with something like the Q6600 leave it a stock speeds.

That be me :) My Q6600 has been running it nicely at stock combined with my 5770 running at 1920x1200 on medium. Think my board is coming to its EOL as whenever I overclock it now it resets, used to run at 3.0 - 3.2 no probs. Still I'm happy with it :)

I will personally wait for the beta to see how my current system performs. My 8800GTX was able to run all games at the highest settings without or low AA/AF (Crysis 1+2,BC2 etc)without any stuttering, everything was smooth. If BF3 is unplayable I will probably get a 6950 Twin Frozr III :)

question: what card would also run GTA 4 at good FPS with high/max settings? and is AMD or Nvidia better for this game?

CPU is a massive factor in GTAIV. Needs a quad and clocked pretty high to get decent fps. Of course the higher the better for the GPU, but VRAM is important for this game, at least 1Gb with 1.5Gb+ recommended.
