Hi all, I've been out of the loop for quite a while with regards to PC upgrades and the like however I'm looking to finally upgrade my aging graphics card and acquired monitor.

I'm currently running a 5870 and generic 26" monitor which perform well enough however I think it's time for a refresh. I've been looking at pairing the following 2 items together but wondered if there were any better alternatives out there, ie would I benefit from 8GB?

the cpu and mobo were upgraded around 2 years ago (wow that has flown by) and includes a stock intel 4670k

*edit*

apologies for the quick edit but i just saw this deal for the msi

Looks a no-brainer but would there be a reason not to go for it?

I'm not wanting to spend much more than the total cost of these but any suggestions are welcomed.

a 480 for £250 makes no sense whatsoever. It's too much for that kind of performance. However, if you get 20% cashback and a free game then I'd say it's worth it.

What do you suggest for ~£250?

a second hand 980 TI or pay a bit more and get a 1070. Or get a new 980Ti if you can find one for 250-300 especially this time of the year.
There's no comparison to 480 and the 6gb of memory will still be enough for quite a while.

However, as I said, a 20% cashback takes that 480 to £200 and the extra game makes it even more appealing.

I agree the 480 should be a £200 card. Likewise the 1060.

You're looking at over £350 for a 1070 though, which is the next reasonable step up. That's 40% more.

The R9 Fury is also £249 at the moment which seems a decent deal at that price point.

To be fair the Gaming X RX480 comes with 20% cashback and a copy of Civ VI which you can flog for a further £25 so to my mind that is a pretty darn good deal.

There's not really much point saying 'Don't get a 480/1060 for that price, not worth it' - what else is he supposed to do?

The market is what it is right now, all well and good advising 2nd hand cards but most people prefer to buy new.

I'd just take the 480 8GB with that cashback/game offer. It's an absolutely titanic upgrade on that 5870 (which would probably get you £30 back).

Hi all, thanks very much for the feedback, I'll have a think and see what I fancy doing.

The market is definitely a different place since I bought the 5870.

Since that RX480 8GB is on offer it looks a good deal - if you are looking for a new monitor,it might be worth looking at a FreeSync one too,but again I don't know what your priorities are in that regard(the best sub £300 for image editing don't have FreeSync or G-Sync).

If you're considering ATI GPU then probably want to look into freesync monitor, either TN or IPS. I've just bought XFX GTR XXX 8GB and might get the acer or asus 27" IPS, but 1440 may be pushing the resolution a bit high (I'm at 1900x1200) now

Agree with the freesync option , I've only recently upgraded to g sync and it is amazing.
Seen as it's only 1080p I would have thought a 480 at that price would be the perfect option with that freesync monitor :)

For GPU get:

Great price with the cashback. Is also one of the better 480's thermally and acoustically. The XFX GTR is usually seen as the 'best' 480, but it can't compete with this MSI on price.

For monitor it's a bit less straightforward.

Samsung have some really nice 144hz freesync panels which should be available soon.

These panels are said to offer much better viewing angles and colour accuracy than the TN panels that they compete with. But, they cost a little bit more and obviously aren't available yet. They may release next month though, so it could be worth waiting a short while.

If you were to get a panel now though, I would try and get a ViewSonic XG2401. Based on various reviews, it's one of the very best 144hz freesync panels available (for now).
