Gpu and riser cables

Hey,

Has anyone used a pcie riser cable for their gpu?

I recently had one on my Pc. Case being a core p5 so felt compelled to have the gpu standing on its side.

I discovered after 3 windows re installs that the stuttering in windows 10 and the immediate direct x crash in any 3d game (eg bf4, battlefront etc.)

It was the riser cable. I took it out and slid the card in the pcie slot. Not a problem. Runs peachy.

Have any of you guys had similar experiences or problems using them?

Does the riser cable degrade gpu performance or is mine just faulty?

You need a pcie 2.0 or 3.0 compatible riser. Last time I looked they were like £100, now it looks like you might be able to get them for £30-40

The cheap ones you can get hold of are usually pcie 1.0 compatible which are fine for bit coin mining but no good for gaming.

I also discovered this the hard way.

I think you are throwing off the timing which is integral to the protocol by using these.

Ahh i see, im not sure what the one i got with the P5 was, I assumed that Thermaltake would have included 2 or 3 seeing as the case would have a meaty GFX to show off!

Well now ive stuck the gpu back into the PCIE on the motherboard, like i said in OP, ive not had any problems at all,

Is there anyway to tell what riser i have?

and Orangey, is that risers in general or the fact that mine is likely a 1.0 if it was causing me issues?

Ah, according to the thernaltake website it should be a 3.0, I didn't realise it came with the case

I would try contacting thermaltake support, as it sounds like you have a faulty cable

Your riser is fine.
You need to set the link speed to gen 1 in bios for pci express slot.

Otherwise you get crashing .

The riser that comes with the p5 is £30.
it's a very good one

The risers in the P5 do have a few bad batches. Get in touch with Tt and they will sort you a new one =)

Using a riser in the Lian -Li PC-05S no issue, with latency or performance degradation. As mentioned I think it's a faulty cable rather then it being a riser cable specific issue in general.

At least test after changing pcie to Gen1.

mine crashed constantly on gen and 3. Perfect on gen 1

Thanks for the replies,

I have chucked an email to thermaltake regarding a replacement if possible.

So in the bios i need to change the setting in bios to gen 1.

now i know its the cable causing the issue, ill pop it back on and play with some settings in the bios, that way i can tell for certain if its a faulty cable.

I did notice that during boot up my motherboard would sit with a "B2" displaying on the LED and it would be like that for about 2 minutes, sometimes not, without the riser, my pc boots to windows almost instantly!
