GPU Client as a service?

I was wondering whether it was worth trying the GPU client as a service but setting it in services.msc to start manually, I thought since it seems to take XP a while to close the CPU client this way that perhaps it might solve the issue I have with restarting GPU clients.

Thoughts?
 
yep do it - worth a try

works for me, though I never had the problem with losing WUs on restarting before anyway

as well as setting it to manual go into the "Log On" tab and tick "Allow service to interact with desktop" which I believe is required for it to actually work with directX properly
 
That has done the trick.:)

It didn't work until I did the interact with desktop bit though, so well done chaps.

Perhaps I'd better let Mr Fungus know.

I've now got 2 GPU clients running and 1 CPU client all on the same machine, life is good.

Ce soir I will try overclocking the cards now.
 
Is the GPU client still working? On the official site it says its time limited to Feb 2007 :confused:

If it is I might give it a go as I have a 1900
 
I think they have reissued the beta, because I only downloaded it the other day.

Give it whirl.:)

If you have a stock fan it could get annoying with it whizzing at full speed!

I used to run mine at around 50-60% but it kept getting full of fluff and getting a bit toasty - got myself an Accelero X2 for it which cools a lot better and is very quiet even at 100%, only problem is that it doesn't force hot air out the back of the case so the CPU temp is now a bit higher than before :rolleyes: :p

same setup here - X2 is excellent cooling GFX but gets a bit toasty in the case cause the hotair is just blasted around rather than out of the case.
 
On water mine are running at a steady 51°C at the moment.

They are currently running at standard clock speeds though.

I've just ordered 2 Noctua fans for the radiator, so hopefully I can run 24/7 when they arrive next week.

Between the 3 clients it's running at 2100 ppd at the moment.

Is that with Linux?

I tried SMP a while back and I couldn't meet the deadlines, however started clocking the cards now and the Fahmon benchmark times are dropping and PPD is climbing.:p (as is the howl from the PS fan....)
 
Yeah I run the Linux SMP client.

Kudos for you running 2 GFX cards but I can't help thinking about all that 'letric you're burning :p
 
Yes, I'll await my next electric bill with dread. can't be too bad though, the Shuttle only has a 400W PS.

I'm tempted now to try and flog a few old bits on MM and get a Quad Core for this one, then try Windows SMP and the 2 GPU clients.
 
It wouldn't be very good for the science if you tried to run SMP and GPU at the same time.

First of all the SMP client will use all four cores of your quad and as far as I am aware you cannot stop this [it was designed for quad core in the first place!].

The GPU client really suffers if it doesn't get a whole core to itself and it will most likely take up at least half of each core it is assigned to, slowing down one of the SMP threads. Since the threads have to be in sync overall performance of your SMP client will drop.

I can't see you making all the deadlines with SMP and 2xGPU. The SMP client on its own on a Quad core will most likely crap all over your GPUs output anyway so no harm in just running the SMP and selling one of your X1900s [or put it in another computer to fold!]
 
Interesting, I have the 2 GFX cards for gaming though as well as folding,Oblivion looks very pretty with them.....

Perhaps a Quad Core with 2 or 3 std clients running?

The std client is running well on 1 core at the moment, and I guess the other is feeding the 2 GFX cards.

The other Shuttle is getting RMA'd next week, the network card doesn't work, I was running it with a USB ADSL Modem.:(

So many options.
 
You don't HAVE to use your GFX cards for folding [they would live longer!].

If you get a Quad-core I would strongly recommend the SMP client. If you don't like the idea of Linux either natively or via VMWare you can run the WinSMP client [it is a bit finicky for some people though, but hey its a beta].
 
I'll flag this post and mull it over, I've a month or so before the other one will get back from being repaired. Thanks for your thoughts.:)
